Martin Denny (April 10, 1911 ‒ March 2, 2005) was an American piano-player and composer best known as the "father of exotica. In a long career that saw him performing well into the 1980s, he toured the world popularizing his brand of lounge music which included exotic percussion, imaginative rearrangements of popular songs, and original songs that celebrated Tiki culture.

Exotica is the first album by Martin Denny, released in 1957. It contained Denny's most famous piece, "Quiet Village", and spawned an entire genre bearing its name. It was recorded December 1956 in Webley Edwards' studio in Waikiki (not, as often reported, the Aluminum Dome at Henry J. Kaiser's Hawaiian Village Complex). The album topped Billboard's charts in 1959.

The 19 tracks on The Best of Martin Denny's Exotica are original recordings from his Liberty albums and include the hits "Exotica," the Les Baxter-penned "Quiet Village," "Hypnotique," "Jungle Drums," and "The Enchanted Isle. Also of special interest is a previously unreleased five-minute interview with Denny and heartfelt liner notes penned by his daughter Christina.

Martin Denny's music came along when the exotic was just as in and rock-n-roll, waltz's, polka's and everything else we played at weddings, Irish funerals, school dances and the various bar scenes. It beings back the childhood like nothing else. Great CD! Best ever exotic music! Brings back wonderful memories of a bygone era. Wish I could have been at the lounge to hear this in person. A must have for those who like Mai Tais, flower leis, swaying palms, and torches!

First, the final track is a re-release of the number four hit and Denny signature tune, "Quiet Village" (originally on the first Exotica LP). "Coronation," "Firecracker," and "Sake Rock" - covered by 1990s group the Cocktails - are representative of the standard Denny oeuvre: birdcall "Polynesian" exotica, Chinese, and Japanese. Most intriguing, however, is the self-parody treatment of "Little Grass Shack" set to a cha-cha-cha beat and punctuated with an absurd duck call instead of the usual birds.

Quiet Village: The Exotic Sounds of Martin Denny. Quiet Village: The Exotic Sounds of Martin Denny was the eighth album by Martin Denny. Released in the summer of 1959, the monophonic version of the album (LRP 3122) reached No. 21 on the Billboard monophonic album chart in November 1959, and the stereophonic version (LST 7122) reached No. 12 on the magazine's stereophonic album chart in January 1960.

During the Nuclear Age, Americans escaped impending thoughts of annihilation with the help of Martin Denny and his relaxing exotic island lounge music. Though some of Denny's signature birdcall backgrounds still sound more scary than soothing, his music retains the power to transport you away from the land of super malls and freeways to a place where nature, men and women live in a Technicolor paradise.

This release bears the same name as another compilation on another label - but is not part of the same Master release.

Born in New York, Mr. Denny toured widely with big bands in the 1930's, served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and in the mid-50's found himself in Hawaii with an engagement at the Hawaiian Village Hotel at Waikiki.

These early Denny creations cover his more wildly "exotic" career phase. The first album, presented in its original "Spectra-Sonic" mono, includes the hit title track in its entire eerie swamp-varmint splendor. Other standouts are the dreamy xylophone on "Lotus Land" and the absolutely wacky "Love Dance," which sounds more like an ornithologist's orgy. The second album, in stereo, gets more intricate and oddly romantic.

But this here 2003 anthology, on the Rev-Ola label, is not, confusingly, the same as any of those prior compact discs proudly bearing the slogan "The Exotic Sounds of Martin Denny" in one way or another. In reality, it's a straightforward 20-song best-of.
