This Heat is the debut studio album by English experimental rock band This Heat. Recorded between 1976 and 1978, it was released in September 1979 by record label Piano. This is some indication of their intentions, and the way This Heat set about realising those intentions.

They were formed in late-1975 in Brixton, London, United Kingdom by ts Charles Bullen (guitar, clarinet, viola, vocals, tapes), Charles Hayward (percussion, keyboards, vocals, tapes) and Gareth Williams (keyboard, guitar, bass, vocals, tapes).
Other groundbreaking independent groups such as Henry Cow and Wire may be their only peers, and much later This Heat also became profoundly influential on the '90s genre known as post-rock. Their angular juxtapositions of abrasive guitar, driving rhythms, and noise loops on the opening cut, "Horizontal Hold," preempt much later activity in the electronica and drum'n'bass scenes.
This Heat released only two albums and one EP during their brief run, and those barely registered amid the competing din of the period. But you can hear in their slim catalog, which returns to wax thanks to these reissues from Light in the Attic, the seeds of vast fields of music that would follow: post-rock, math rock, homemade musique concrète, and experimental electronica. This Heat did not yield a single signature sound so much as a zone of possibilities. Their second and final album, 1981's Deceit, doesn't entirely do away with the extreme sonic abstraction. Radio Prague" is an experiment in mechanical pulses and cut-up radio broadcasts, and "Hi Baku Shyo (Suffer Bomb Disease)" is a kind of expressionist sound painting of a post-nuclear landscape: wails, church bells, buzzing flies. For the most part, though, the album marks a significant leap forward in songwriting.
SuperJags I had no idea This Heat were on Bandcamp. I found it through my feed. My old vinyl copy is virtually unplayable these days. 40 years on it still sounds fresh. A brilliant, brilliant album. philip I heard "Horizontal Hold" in a short film about the German Democratic Republic and it blew me away. djepan This album is crazy. I've never heard anything like it and it was recorded 40 years ago. Really, the creativity is off the charts here.
In 1976, This Heat played its first show.

This Heat – This Heat were an English experimental rock band, formed in early 1976 in Camberwell, London by ts Charles Bullen, Charles Hayward and Gareth Williams. Shortly thereafter, This Heat released the Health and Efficiency EP, Deceit, the bands second and final album, was produced with help from noted reggae mixer Martin Frederick and released in 1981.
This makes listening to This Heat a mentally demanding, but ultimately very rewarding experience. Many of the concepts - especially the not-so-sane ideas they introduce here - were largely expanded upon on the critically acclaimed 1982 follow-up, Deceit. Both albums have over the years proved themselves to be rather essential listening for lovers of music that trades the downtrodden paths for adventures in unexplored areas of sound
