Constantin Silvestri (1913-1969), born and trained in Bucharest, was something of a prodigy (he had played the piano in public at the age of 10). His conducting debut, in 1930, was a success, and he devoted himself to this art through opera productions and symphony concerts in his place of birth. Silvestri was also a composer. International engagements did not occur until the mid-1950s (this was a time when Eastern countries restricted the travel of their citizens). Such high-profile and well-received engagements in the West forced Silvestri to abandon his country and he settled in Paris

The orchestra was the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra led by their chief conductor Constantin Silvestri. There was no doubt this must have been an iconic part A few years ago a friend of mine put on a CD with a recording of Elgar’s concert overture In the South. Silvestri was a musical prodigy. Born in 1913 he showed immense promise as a piano virtuoso and composer but he was only 17 when he conducted his first concert (and that program featured Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring!) In 1958 he fled to the West and for three years guest conducted big orchestras in Europe and in the US. Surprisingly, in 1961 he accepted a contract as chief conductor at Bournemouth, at that point a musical backwater. For the longest time it was difficult to posthumously assess Silvestri’s musical legacy.
