Autechre - Exai It feels like Autechre have smoothed out a bit since the days of Draft . 0 and Untilted. On their last two albums, they pulled back from the mathematics and rediscovered the beautiful yet alien sense of melody that marked their earliest work. But it was hard to know what to expect from their new one-just that it was going to be big. It comes as no surprise that the Manchester duo's 11th album proper is a double-disc behemoth. But that doesn't make it any less intense. I've always seen Autechre albums as the world's most intimidating jigsaw puzzles.

The album was released in digital form on 7 February 2013, with the double CD and quadruple vinyl versions released on 5 March 2013. Like other Autechre albums, Exai features album artwork by The Designers Republic.

Following this modus operandi, Autechre, perhaps more than any of their musical brethren, successfully tread the middle ground between ancient and modern, analogue and digital, composition and improvisation. Over the course of a generation they’ve explored each of these fecund landscapes to the horizon and beyond, all the while manipulating music into contractions that, whilst quite amazingly uncomfortable, never cease to amaze with their richness and variety.

Straight off, first listen, love it. Never before has ae been so accessibly and joyful. This is like a reward after a career up to our ears in noise. Usually with an Autechre release I need to stare at it a bit to fully absorb but this is FUN HQ AUDIO... bring on the main stage at summer festivals!! BD
It has been some time since I’ve been interested in Autechre‘s work, but this release is a bit of a turn. I may be completely off base, but it sounds like a play-by-play deconstruction of every contemporary dance music style on the scene. Each track seems to be an archetypal example of garage, reggaeton or what-have-you, with its guts turned inside out and churned in Autechre’s now equally archetypal stochastic and generative style. The most engaging element for me is that the formative elements of the styles are still recognizable and often nearly danceable. Nothing will beat Confield for this classicist, or their project with The Hafler Trio for pure exoticism, but its good to hear veteran artists still breaking relatively new ground.

don't make the mistake i did by listening to this album on speakers this is definitely a headphone only album. initially i thought this album was very mediocre but i decided to give it another chance later with my SHURE SE 425 headphones and wow what a difference. theres so many sounds i missed and man the quality of the sounds is just super crisp and clear. this is a good album and a bit more challenging then there previous work so good listening tools and attention is required. this is not background music.never the less though this is not a catchy album with anything all that memorable and i can't imagine this being on heavy rotation ever its not that interesting enough to listen to repeatedly and is a bit long. there r probably a lot of tracks that could of been cut to make a more solid half length album. i still much prefer albums like Draft 7:30 which for me is the pinicle of Autrechre's career and Confield. there last album and EP was pretty solid as well.
Sadly expect the expected seems about right. I expected Exai to be different from Oversteps, but not that it would essentially be a re-tread of their Confield / Untilted / Draft style. i.e. Extensively random rhythms and textures, and barely any melodies. You will probably have many people disagreeing with you, as they will with my review. And yeah, that's fine. But this is not a "good" Autechre album, and as it follows Oversteps, Exai seems hideously lengthy, directionless and disappointing.
same or different, you still gotta admit that they founded their own sound and their own conventions.

Wow... in comparison with what or which album exactly? Never mind, I think it's pretty good.
i would suggest you a more in-depth listening session, preferably at a reasonably loud volume. this is as exciting a release as they come..
Tyler Is Not Here
Right on! I've been listening to this album for more than a week now. All the sounds are already stored in my mind. This is pure bliss and again very diffirent than their previous albums. Autechre keeps amazing me with every new release! Groundbreaking, challenging and multiple eargasms. I also recommend to listen carefully to the japanese bonus track "keyosc". This is another brilliant composition and works great as the last track on Exai. It's always a special feeling to hear a new autechre album for the first time, and I'm already curious where they will take us next time. I do admit it took me some time to get into this one, but again I'm very satisfied. Exai reminds me of the atmospheres of Draft 7.30, Untilted & Quaristice mixed with the softer ambient tracks found on Oversteps. Now, I'm just waiting impatiently to add the 4xLP to my collection :)
