Bernard "Buddy" Rich (September 30, 1917 – April 2, 1987) was an American jazz drummer and bandleader. He is considered one of the most influential drummers of all time and was known for his virtuoso technique, power, and speed. He performed with Tommy Dorsey, Harry James and Count Basie, and led a big band. Rich was born in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, New York, to Jewish-American parents Bess Skolnik and Robert Rich, both vaudevillians.
Buddy Rich: A Timeline. No player in history could so confidently-and inarguably-wear the title of the world’s greatest drummer. Buddy Rich was simply a phenomenon, astounding vaudeville audiences in the late 1910s and early ’20s, well before most children began their conventional schooling. Indeed, there was nothing conventional about Buddy Rich. On the drums, he simply went places that no one else could go. For sure, he knew the value of dazzling an audience

Both Most and Mainieri (who also did most of the group s writing) are abundantly inventive soloists, while the buoyantly effective rhythm section is a Rich archetype. With the leader keeping the drum solos within reasonable limits mostly breathtakingly brilliant four or eights, and passages ingeniously integrated with the rhythmic patterns of the ensemble this is one of his tightest small groups. As a bonus, this set includes tracks from rare radio broadcasts aired in October 1961, during one of the band s appearances at Birdland

Buddy Rich continued touring and performing until the end of his life. On April 2, 1987, he died of heart failure following surgery for a malignant brain tumor. He was interred in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles. Rich preferred to concentrate his efforts on big band and jazz music, rarely venturing outside of those genres. He held a low opinion of country and rock and declined to involve himself with those genres. During the medical therapy prior to his death, a nurse asked him whether he was allergic to anything, to which Rich replied "Yes, country and western music". Mel Tormé wrote in his book on Rich, Traps: The Drum Wonder, although Rich was not much of a rock and roll fan, 'Yet, whenever some rock drummers came to greet him after a show

But his true trademarks-what people still marvel at today- were his ferociously powerful swing and his mind-boggling solos. Rich’s stock climbed higher in 1938, when the drummer joined trumpeter Bunny Berigan’s band for six months, while Berigan was basking in the success of his classic hit, I Can’t Get Started. Another career advance occurred the following year, when Buddy was enlisted by star clarinetist Artie Shaw, whose big band was touring in the wake of the smash hit Begin the Beguine. It was no secret that this man of complex personality could often be scrappy, and tales of Rich abrasively chewing out his young musician employees are infamous. Yet Buddy had honed his own professionalism under similarly stern leaders such as Artie Shaw and Tommy Dorsey.
