Darkness no longer, a child is born Mother shed tears of joy as baby test his lungs My daddy's not there where he ought to be Somewhere in Georgia, skinning and shooting craps on his knees. Another victim born out here in the hood And based on statistics it really ain't all good Welfare takes the tab and daddy can't sign And it can't be seen, the family becomes a crime.

He was paralyzed during the recording, but still managed to both sing and oversee the project. According to Australian radio station Triple J, Mayfield managed to painstakingly record his songs by laying on his back, the only way he could get enough air into his lungs, and singing one line at a time. All tracks composed by Curtis Mayfield.
On 13 August 1990 Curtis was doing a sound-check for an outdoor concert, onstage at Wingate Field, Flatbush, Brooklyn when the lighting rig came down on top of him crushing his spine in three places, and resulting in him being paralysed from the neck down.
Produced with a cast of contemporary R&B players, the album doesn’t update Mayfield’s style; it underscores where his influence is felt - everywhere. Black music as we hear it today wouldn’t exist without Curtis Mayfield. His ’60s recordings with the Impressions and solo work in the ’70s - rumbling funk jams, incisive songs of protest, divinely inspired ballads, the landmark Superfly soundtrack - prefigure everything from rap to the lush R&B of Babyface .
