The best jazz trumpeters in history have been at the centre of almost every major revolution in jazz. No small number of the world’s best jazz trumpeters have emerged in the last 30 years, the most significant of which has been Wynton Marsalis. More recently, Roy Hargrove, Christian Scott and Ambrose Akinmusire have demonstrated that there’s no shortage of talented horn men waiting to break through into the spotlight. An accomplished technician who could play with verve and swagger, James’ band was also renowned for showcasing up-and-coming talent, including a young Frank Sinatra and Buddy Rich. 38: Bubber Miley (1903-1932).

The early '90s saw the Verve label revived, reissuing older material, and signing current day artists. This ten-song sampler with four well-known jazz icons plus saxophonist Maceo Parker gave the public a taste of what Verve was offering in a contemporary era, while attempting to stay close to their established tradition. While vocalists Shirley Horn, Abbey Lincoln, and Betty Carter were at the far end of their careers, they still were very good, while tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson was at his zenith. For a couple of bucks this sampler is not bad, but fans of any of these artists will want to go for the full treatment on any one of their fine efforts for this label, which has always exuded quality.

In the intervening years, the North Sea Jazz Festival has developed into a major international jazz event. Drummer Jack DeJohnette has played with most of the greats during his five decades of performing: Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett and, maybe most famously, Miles Davis. With In Movement, DeJohnette teams up with some contemporary greats, bassist Matthew Garrison and saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, in a collaborative effort that speaks to their combined strengths and paths, the ECM Records legacy, and the future of jazz. Swedish group Fire! has been releasing boldly innovative avant-garde jazz records for the better part of a decade, as well as having collaborated with indie rock MVP Jim O’Rourke and Australian drone artist Oren Ambarchi. At 74 years old, Dr. Lonnie Smith, an organist and soul-jazz icon who’s worked with Lee Morgan and Miles Davis, still maintains the funk on Evolution, his 24th album.

He's the best of the best his music is inspiring and he composed and played his whole life like 50 years. Sir Duke should be 1 or 2. A great pianist and composer. Surely better than 5 on list. Easily the greatest Jazz guitarist who ever lived. 24 Nat King Cole Nathaniel Adams Coles, known professionally as Nat King Cole, was an American singer who first came to prominence as a leading jazz pianist. He has the best jazz quartet I have ever heard in my life.

This has got to be one of the best songs ever recorded. It's just do beautiful and expressive. Trane was so beautiful. This song has a great bass riff, excellent solos on multiple instruments and a very memorable 'chorus. It's an enjoyable listen and Ferguson's outstanding trumpet playing makes it all the more so. This song makes my chops hurt just by listening to it! Maynard Ferguson is one of the best trumpet players! - Phillip873. What this is jazz? I came here because I've been wanting to get more into jazz. Great song, but I feel like while it's jazzy at parts, its overall genre would be more akin to experimental rock.
