You've Come a Long Way, Baby is the second studio album by English electronic music producer Fatboy Slim. It was first released on 19 October 1998 in the United Kingdom by Skint Records and a day later in the United States by Astralwerks. Cook recorded and produced the album at his home studio in Brighton, known as the House of Love, using an Atari ST computer, Creator software, and floppy disks

Oh my, talk about albums that haven't aged well! The whole album seems very much tied to its time, there really is no timeless quality to this. Most tracks (The Rockafeller Skank being a prime example) are gimmicky up to the point of being downright annoying and the sounds/samples are pretty crude (and not in a good way!). Of course the album has its high points - Right Here, Right Now, Praise You and Acid 8000 are all fantastic tracks but the rest are severely lacking in comparison. I suppose the biggest disappointment is that the album sounds so different to what I remembered.

Fatboy Slim's debut album, Better Living Through Chemistry, was one of the surprises of the big beat revolution of 1996 - an eclectic blowout, all tracked to thunderous loops and masterminded by Norman Cook, a former member of the British pop band the Housemartins. It might not have been as startlingly fresh as the Chemical Brothers, but the hard-hitting beats and catchiness, not to mention consistency, of Better Living was a shock, and it raised expectations for Fatboy Slim's second album, You've Come a Long Way, Baby. Release date: 19 September 1998 (UK), 20 September 1998 (US). Label: Skint (UK), Astralwerks (US). Clear disc tray?: Yes. Right Here, Right Now (A Minor). The Rockafeller Skank (G Minor). Gangster Trippin ( Main key: D Minor, Accompanying keys: F Major). Build It Up - Tear It Down (Eb Minor). Kalifornia (D Minor). Soul Surfing (Eb Minor). You're Not from Brighton (B Minor).

Fat Boy Slim's "You've Come A Long Way, Baby" is probably the most famous big beat techno album ever, and it's easy to see why. The tracks which aren't hits are the "weakest" part of the album, but that's only because they grow on you - once you've listened to classics like "Gangsta's Paradise" or "Right Here, Right Now" it's pretty hard to like a song like "Soul Surfing". Give them time, though, and I'm sure you'll love them just as much.

Fatboy Slim was born out of the rave and ecstasy culture of Brighto. coastal counterculture enclave only one hour from London but worlds away in terms of ethos, vibe and culture. His music made us come together. It made us celebrate each other. It was loving and happy and uniting. 26:32 Sampling with no rules, having fun, but not always getting away with it. 28:51 ‘You’ve Come A Long Way, Baby’, goes to number one in the charts. 30:36 Using feedback by being a DJ as to what pleased the crowd. 32:19 Record sources of his riffs, drum beats etc 36:27 Norman’s have fun and break rules attitude harmonised with Spike Jonze’s video.

Find out more about our use of this data, and also our policy on profanity. Find out more about our use of this data. Twelve years on from the release of this second album, some things have inevitably changed. A lifetime away from hard-partying origins, Norman Cook’s raised two kids, celebrated a celebrity marriage, reconciled a celebrity marriage, hit the bottle, beat the bottle and, when he had the time, released heady collections of genre-defining anthems. At times, Cook’s life has played out replete with typical DJ clichés. But his place in the dance music annals as Fatboy Slim has long been confirmed
