Machito Jazz was a personal project of Norman Granz, recorded under his supervision. To paraphrase his liners, not only was it an early meeting of jazz horns with exciting Afro-Cuban rhythms, but also there was significant contrast in the horns, Charlie Parker and Flip Phillips. While no great new standard or technique emerged from this session, the performance more than lives up to the concept. Unfortunately, the limitations of Afro-Cuban jazz (jazz horns soloing over conga rather than fusion) ultimately become apparent

Charlie Parker at the peak of his powers in the setting of an Afro-Cuban big band. The arrangements are great and Bird sounds totaly inspired! Such a deal! Listen to Parker and Flip Phillips trading fours in the "Jazz" section of Chico O'Farrel's "Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite"! Good Lord!!! This is but one more piece of evidence that Charlie Parker was the greatest musical mind of the twentieth century.

Charlie Parker With Strings marked Bird’s first recording for Norman Granz’s Clef Records, at a session with Machito And His Orchestra. More sessions soon followed, and he appeared at the JATP at Carnegie Hall in February, that were recorded featuring Fats Navarro (trumpet) Tommy Turk (trombone) Sonny Criss, Flip Phillips (tenor saxophone) Hank Jones (piano) Ray Brown (bass) and Shelly Manne (drums). But that initial session yielded the magnificent Charlie Parker With Strings. On 16 September 1950 Bird played Carnegie Hall as part of Granz’s Jazz At the Philharmonic series of concerts that toured the USA.
