Don Blackman could never be accused of clogging the bins with his own records. Prior to this 1982 debut for GRP - the st/vocalist's lone LP until 2002 - he was quite visible, though only as a desired touring and session hand, with connections to c, Lenny White/Twennynine, and Weldon Irvine

A jazz funk masterpiece, and THE record by the legendary Don Blackman - the only one issued under his own name for many many years, and a famous little set that's been sampled endlessly over the years, and for good reason! The vibe here is one that's barely been matched again - a blend of 70s fusion, bassy funk, and even tighter riffing - all put together with a greater depth and sense of soul than most other records of it's type.

my GRP copy's matrix is not much of any information of Discogs.A: GRP 5509 SA M1 MR 25614B: GRP 5509 SB M1 M2 A(triangle mark)-25614-xGOD IS LOVE(on A side)、STERLING(on both side)the logo on the label is red brown, the cover is not promo.i think this title was pressed in several place..anyway the white promo label without STERLING is not the early issue, that copy's cover printing quality is lower than other color label copies...
Dondallon
Runout info updated. STERLING stamped both sides. Run out scribes are T1 or TI rather than HI and there is also a small (triangular) delta shape of dots ⁂ on both sides. Sterling mastering engineer Ted Jenson is (unusually) identified by only 'T' on both sides, appears he cut the B side first, then the A side. Pressings have wide ring RCA pattern mould marks. Promo copies were stock pressings with gold promo stamped sleeves.
Wild Python
This B&W promo label version doesn't have a STERLING stamp on the run out. The Greg Lee Processing number # 36673 dates this squarely into 1990. Promos of the original pressing didn't have B&W promo labels - only stock copies with gold promo stamped sleeves. Lastly the centre pill (mould) marks on the labels aren't the same. Initial copies did come with b&w printed inners, but usually they came in a plain white die-cut paper inner.
Bumand
The 1992 EU reissue is the only CD edition of this classic album where the sound recording was sourced and digitally mastered from the actual analogue master tape.. In adidtion, the mastering was done so well that it actually sounds better than the original vinyl.

Please can someone who knows the facts about this album. As I have been told all the first pressings of this album should have Sterling God Is Love etched on matrix and have HI etched on it. Well I have two Promo copies both have TA etched on the matrix. But both have Sterling God Is Love etched on. But Discogs state Sterling isn't on the second pressing which is confusing me.
Alister
The original first pressing has Matrix / Runout (Side 1: Run-out, Stamped, Hand Etched): STERLING GOD IS LOVE A- ↔ GRP 5509
Cel
I have a sealed copy. Any way to differentiate between the two GRP 5509 versions?
Arar
Hi there ! What about the 2017 Expansion vinyl reissue ? Did someone can comment about the pressing quality ? Many Thanks, cheers :-)
Lightbinder
anyone heard the reissue? quality press? 4 more words here
Kagaramar
It sounds great. Full sounding and crisp. Haven't heard other pressings but this is a good pressing.
Wizard
I have this Version, its official and it Sounds Great
Bludworm
This is not a Japanese Pressing. It may have the OBI and all but the CD is the Expansion Re-issue.
superstar
If this is the same repress as mine the quality is excellent as good as the original and the first press is top class and the studio production is first rate and the pressing bears this out.I have two copy's of the original so i should know.
Beardana
It looks like you have the original, the Arista copy's do not have the black inner sleeve with the lyrics, GRP on the record labels were the originals the bootlegs copied the original pressing but some of the pictures are blurred especial on the back.
Wishamac
does this repress have a tip on LP sleeve (ie back is a glued on paper square over folded down edges) or a modern style?
Delaath
iwc62 Hi there, i have a copy but i'm not 100% sure if it's an original press. My copy has the inner lyric sleeve, the label says promotional copy not for sale - GRP 5509 and in the run out on side 1 GOD IS LOVE GRP - 5509 / side 2 GRP - 5509 - L36603 X. Has a gold sticker on the cover is cut right next to the N on the front of the cover where it says DON. Is this an original or a bootleg? You have the original GRP pressing mastered at Sterling Sound.

I,ve got the Japanese CD issue which is blatantly recorded off a vinyl record you can hear the clicks and pops in the quiet passages poor quality.
I love Mercedes
Yes totally agree, its a disgrace that we are being conned by the record cos.
Beazerdred
I have one of these copies and always suspected it might be a bootleg, and my copy does the same thing and loses one channel....so i would have to say that these are bootlegs despite every other detail being accurate from the matrix numbers and barcode, but no one can be sure, they might of been a bad pressing. Another give away is the edge of the disc has been left sharpe or abrasive after the excess vinyl was trimmed off which is unusual, but again hard to say....the only way to check would be to compare this copies with some others from the first pressing.

Hi, I do not know why this LP should have been released 1991. I cannot find anything on the record, cover , run out that states that. Does anybody have any other Info?
Oso
I had a German copy and buy this record in the mid 80's not in the 90's ... For me it's an original german copy issued in 1982 ! don't understand why is marking 90's on listing discogs
Budar
As far as i remember, this release coincides with the "RARE"-Compilation Series (feat. Rare Soul from the late 70s/early 80s) on the same Label that were all pressed in German mainly for the British but also the European market. My copy has a "Special Price" Sticker, which was used in the early 90s.
Tar
I have the original as well and still nobody can tell me why this record should be a re-issue. no indications what so ever. no info from the internet. this record which states on discogs 1991 shows the correct date 1982 as the original. I am still convinced that it is a bormal german release.
Mopimicr
this is a reissue... are you looking for the original?
DireRaven
Saw this in Japan in Face Records , Shibuya for 20 euro !Was very unsure of its authenticity, the cover looked old enough - it even had the entertainment value sticker but,the vinyl had no mastering stamps and there was NO innersleeve, i own a high wualtiy RI so it may still be there...#5star #Masterpiece
Bragis
This is such a solid album, start to finish. Worth the high prices. Sampled by J Dilla among others I'm sure.
Tujar
My copy also loses one channel at the end of "Holding you...", and this also happens at the beginning of the song, just when the drums come in.Mine is a white label promo on Arista, and the cover does look a bit blurry. Is yours the same, Djprone?
Frey
Wicked tight shit. Dennis Chamber on drums = Quality control.
Blackbrand
I bought mine from a guy I used to do London record fairs with in the early 90s for £20. He acquired a huge stack of these off a dealer from LA. We were never sure but suspect they could of been bootlegs but very well done none the less (if thats the case). My copy loses one channel of audio towards the end of Holding You Loving You but other than that the quality is fantastic. I don't know if any one else can shine any light on this.
Wilalmaine

Another give away is the edge of the disc has been left sharpe or abrasive after the excess vinyl was trimmed off which is unusual, but again hard to say....the only way to check would be to compare this copies with some others from the first pressing.
Cashoutmaster
Has a inner lyric sheet.

A masterpiece.
