Vapor City is the first album released by Travis Stewart, . a Machinedrum on Ninja Tune and his nineteenth release under the Machinedrum name overall. It was released on September 29, 2013. The concept for Vapor City came about through a series of vivid, recurring dreams Stewart had about a fictional city. Each track on the album is meant to explore and define a different district or neighborhood within this world.
Vapor City" is Machinedrum's follow up to the highly touted Planet Mu release, "Room(s). To that end, the only sin of "Vapor City" is that it followed "Room(s)," and wasn't an aesthetic copy, when released on Ninja Tune. Machinedrum didn't completely abandon his work started on "Room(s). Melodies of a pleasingly earwormy nature litter the LP, with ‘Infinite Us’ or the slow rush of ‘Rise N Fall’ proving immediate highlights. If there’s a criticism, it’s that these melodies are too often given a haunted, detuned and ghostly feel, as though Stewart’s MacBook has somehow become haunted.
