Rise Above is a tribute album with a cause behind it. Henry Rollins assembles 20 different artists from punk, hard rock, and hip hop fame to help him deliver 24 different renditions of famous Black Flag songs. Rollins Bands provides the backup music for all the tracks on the album. Present to sing some of Black Flag's classics are former Black Flag singers Keith Morris and Chuck Dukowski, punk legend Iggy Pop, Exene Cervenka, front women of Black Flag's contemporary band, X, grandson of Hank Williams, Hank Williams III, rap legend Ice T, Motorhead's own Lemmy, and Rancid's. Ryan Adams – vocals and instrumentation (track 24). Tom Araya – vocals (track 16). Tim Armstrong – lead vocals (track 19); backing vocals (tracks 1, 10, and 14).

Black Flag (band) – Black Flag was an American punk rock band formed in 1976 in Hermosa Beach, California. Initially called Panic, the band was established by Greg Ginn, the guitarist, primary songwriter and they are widely considered to be one of the first hardcore punk bands as well as one of the pioneers of post-hardcore. In 2002, former Black Flag frontman Henry Rollins re-recorded this track with Public Enemy's Chuck D for Rise Above: 24 Black Flag Songs to Benefit the West Memphis Three. The benefit album raised money to help fund the legal defence of The West Memphis Three - three men convicted of the 1993 murders of three boys in West Memphis, Arkansas - who many believe to be innocent.
