Recorded in New York, the album arrived at a time when Astatke had begun to master the delicate fusion of styles needed to create Ethio jazz. I left the UK for America and studied at Berklee College in Boston.

Mulatu Astatqé (also sometimes spelled Mulatu Astatke, as he is on the liner notes to this release) might be most known to international audiences through his tracks on the excellent Ethiopiques CD anthology series of Ethiopian music. Long before those tracks were compiled for that series, however, he had an American release with this 1972 instrumental album, on which he's billed as "Mulatu of Ethiopia. Like much of the best of the circa-early-'70s contemporary Ethiopian music on Ethiopiques, it's a fine, at times captivating blend of late-'60s American soul and.

Mulatu Of Ethiopia is the third album Astatke recorded in New York for the Worthy label but the first with a recognisably Ethiopian character. In his liner notes for Mulatu Of Ethiopia, label owner Gil Snapper makes the prescient prediction that Astatke is destined to make international musical history. A trail-blazing masterpiece which sold only.

Strut did such a nice job with the reissue, I wonder why there are no musician credits? In the liner notes Astatke mentions "the sax player" but he is never named -- any have any insight into this, or know who played on the sessions?
Acrobat
100% percent agree. The mono alone mix is worth the price of admission.

Does anyone know if this version also has the label misprint for track 3. Dewel. On the record it's listed as Da-Wol

One of the best pressed records I've heard recently. Sounds fantastic. The mono mix is really punchy with a ton of bottom-end bass power. No crackles, pops or clicks either... super quiet pressing. If more new records were as good as this I'd buy without hesitation... as it is my vinyl purchasing days are more or less drawing to an end.

For any US based buyers having trouble finding this, Bull Moose has copies for $37 shipped. You can find them here:http://www.bullmoose.com/p/24990063/mulatu-astatke-mulatu-of-ethiopia-3lp-6-panel-gatefold-w-download-cod

Very nicely done reissue. Nice packaging, but I don't like tri-fold sleeves, no practical, but beside that good pressing quality and sound. I agree that mono mix sounds the best and third record with outtakes is also not boring and actually worth to listen to as well. Timeless classic IMHO.

Could anyone who owns it give more information about this release (matrix/runout, photos of labels & backcover, description), thank you! I think I own this version, here's the info: Matrix/Rounout / Side A: -42710- STRUT129LPB-AMatrix/Rounout / Side A: -42710- STRUT129LPB-BBarcode: 7 30003 31291 5Sticker on front: "Official reissue of classic 1972 Ethio jazz LP featuring new interview with Mulatu Astatke. On his bandcamp, the label says :"Strut present the first official reissue of a landmark album in the field of African music, Mulatu Astatke’s ‘Mulatu Of Ethiopia’ from 1972".So it seems this a total legit reissue. I think Strut is a serious company. I can be wrong...Right, the mono LP is really good, better than the stereo one.Love this release.
shustrik
Yes I agree too. The mono really shines compared to the stereo, it sounds like it was recorded during this decade !
Kiaile
Is this the stereo or mono master mix? Anyone that hasn't heard the mono mix needs to - it's crisper, fatter and much heavier!!
PanshyR
The mono pressing is much better in sound profile than the stereo mix.
Thorgaginn
do agree on this! like the mono version more! the out-takes is fun too!
Shakagul
so is this a legal reissue, not bootleg and sounds good, or what? any comments?
Rare
just picked this up, and the sound is pretty good. Nice job they did on this. I hate buying re-issues, but this OG is too expensive.
Bolanim
the sound is good, especially the mono one. It is official definetly.

I returned two brand new copies to the local store, records were badly warped...
Ynap
Same comments as below, My copy came sealed, but was warped to a degree that it was barely playable. The mastering sounded flat. Origins of the repress are indeed very unclear and I highly doubt it is completely legit. I would not recommend buying this record unless you are sure about the quality of the vinyl.
Marinara
It seems hard to believe that all "reissues" are legitimate. There is no indication of the reissuing label, no copyrights or licensing whatsoever. Unless Worthy Records still issuing the record with exact the same artwork since 1972, which is quite unlikely to happen. Moreover the mastering is quite poor, the sound is flat with no dynamic, regardless the fact that the record is pressed on 180gram. My copy looks 100% as a typical bootleg. Record is also warped. Beware.
Wat!?
This reissue is on standard weight vinyl housed in a heavyweight tip-on jacket. The front cover art wraps around onto the spine, and there isn't any printed text on the spine.
Moralsa
This reissue is on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl housed in a standard direct board printed jacket. The spine lists the cat # W-1020, STEREO, MULATU OF ETHIOPIA, WORTHY

Can someone please tell me how to tell the difference between the original and the reissue? Thank you!
Dawncrusher
so many reasons. pressing site, master tapes, grade of vinyl. etc.
watchman
if you didn't pay $700 for the record, then you def have the reissue
Malakelv
are the reissue legit and how do they sound please? Thanks
Opilar
The jacket,or run out groove,or thickness or smell...ink color and texture
Malaris
Check the labels - they are slightly different in terms of font size thickness, layout - just minor differences I can see from the images up on discogs
Conjulhala
The only knock on this album is it's length (too short). It's amazing.
