Faust became one of the premier bands in the international appreciation of the genre that would eventually be known as krautrock. The Faust Tapes was a cut-and-paste album, which spliced together a large number of bits and pieces from their extensive collection of private recordings not originally intended for release. Faust quickly turned the night’s frown upside down, though, leaving Aluk Todolo to be the band most likely to have bargained with the devil and Cold Cave to be the most Teutonic. Instead of acting in line with the literary allusions of its name or conforming to the German stereotype, Faust was whatever its members’ whims dictated it to be, and that was by far the evening’s most gratifying experience.
WFMU Fest, the first festival curated by the ever-present and ever-wonderful WFMU, went down this past weekend at Music Hall of Williamsburg. The fest offered loud sounds by new groups Cold Cave, Pissed Jeans, and Drunkdriver, and reunion shows by Faust and Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. Freak Scene writer Jamie Johns hit all three nights.

Sosna's chronic alcoholism ended a brief reunion with Faust "after four or five exhausting days", and he died on 10 November 1996. Gunter Wüsthoff has not taken part in any of the reunions. Krautrock legends Faust toured the United States in 2016, working with different guest musicians at each location. To be specific, this is the Jean-Hervé Peron and Werner Diermaier lineup of Faust (the other lineup, headed by additional co-founder Hans Joachim Irmler, doesn't appear to be as active, and may have ceased activity), along with Maxime Manac'h.

Faust's records have never been the kind you dissect. The band seems to have some kind of plan at work, but not the type of plan left for others to follow. It's not the kind of algorithm that bears any scrutiny; yet, 30 years later, the music remains. And given the state of the boys in der Gruppe, that alone makes it worthy of reissue. And at the end, realize that nobody knows if it really happened. And at the end, I say "amen. That album would turn out to be So Far, their 1972 sophomore release, and the record with which the press (or whomever it was covering them at the time- probably just the NME's Ian MacDonald) caught up. Within seconds, the change is obvious.
