Buddy Holly and the Crickets in 1957 (top to bottom: Allison, Holly and Mauldin). Holly was unhappy with the results of his time with Decca; he was inspired by the success of Buddy Knox's "Party Doll" and Jimmy Bowen's "I'm Stickin' with You", and visited Norman Petty, who had produced and promoted both records. The single reached number 10 on the pop chart and 13 on the R&B chart. Holly and the Crickets performed "That'll Be the Day" and "Peggy Sue" on The Ed Sullivan Show on December 1, 1957. Following the appearance, Niki Sullivan left the group because of the intensive touring International tours and breakaway (1958).
The Buddy Holly Story is the first posthumously released compilation album by Buddy Holly and the Crickets. The album was released on February 28, 1959 by the Coral Records less than a month after Holly's death. The album featured previously released singles by Buddy Holly on both the Brunswick label (with the Crickets) and the Coral label (as a solo artist). The album became a top twenty hit in the United States and England. The album was certified Gold in the .
Buddy Holly was the toast of the charts in the last few months of 1957. His first smash with the Crickets, ‘That’ll Be The Day,’ topped the American bestsellers in September and was just coming to the end of a three-week reign in the UK when the group’s follow-up, ‘Oh, Boy!’ hit the US countdown - when Holly was also big news in his own right with a third hit, ‘Peggy Su. All three went on to become rock ‘n’ roll classics. Holly co-wrote ‘That’ll Be The Day’ with his Crickets bandmate Jerry Allison and the group’s producer, Norman Petty.
