Soundgarden was an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1984 by singer and rhythm guitarist Chris Cornell, lead guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto.
From a metallic standpoint, their peak was 1991's Badmotorfinger, with the later albums showing a more alternative side to the band (and also produced their biggest hit single, "Black Hole Sun").
Soundgarden redefined rock music for a generation. Their six classic studio albums, plus a wealth of singles, EPs, videos, live albums and retrospectives, showcase their enduring value and significance as a truly ‘alternative’ band. Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine. Grunge pioneers who took the heavy sludge of '70s metal and infused it with the raw aesthetic of '80s punk to become an important band of the '90s.
One of the biggest rock bands out of Seattle, Soundgarden was formed in 1984 by singer and rhythm guitarist Chris Cornell, lead guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto. Matt Cameron became the band’s full-time drummer in 1986, while bassist Ben Shepherd became a permanent replacement for Yamamoto in 1990. While one of the creators of the Grunge alternative rock and the first to sign to a major label, they only rose to stardom once the genre was popularized by Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains in the early 90s.
Superunknown is Soundgarden’s biggest-selling album, certainly their most iconic, and, for a great swathe of people out there, their definitive statement as a band. It is, indeed, entirely possible to argue that. So much so that it is almost embarrassing. It effectively serves as the spirit of Soundgarden distilled to five minutes, 51-seconds flat. And you know what? It still sounds like the fucking future of rock music.
