Gigli recorded extensively for HMV (now EMI) and his records were among the company's best sellers for many years. Gigli's honeyed tone and his ability to infuse his singing with a great deal of light and shade made him a perfect interpreter of songs, including Neapolitan and Italian popular songs as well as classic ballads.
Andrea Chénier is a verismo opera in four acts by Umberto Giordano, set to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica, and first performed on 28 March 1896 at La Scala, Milan. The story is based loosely on the life of the French poet André Chénier (1762–1794), who was executed during the French Revolution. The character Carlo Gérard is partly based on Jean-Lambert Tallien, a leading figure in the Revolution
Beniamino Gigli (pronounced ; 20 March 1890 – 30 November 1957) was an Italian opera singer. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest tenors of his generation. Gigli was born in Recanati, in the Marche, the son of a shoemaker who loved opera. His parents did not, however, view music as a secure career. Beniamino's brother Lorenzo became a famous Italian painter. In 1914, he won first prize in an international singing competition in Parma.
