British Steel is the sixth studio album by the British heavy metal band Judas Priest, released on 14 April 1980. It is also the band's first album with Dave Holland on drums. British Steel saw the band reprise the commercial sound they had established on Killing Machine. This time, they abandoned some of the dark lyrical themes which had been prominent on their previous releases, but some of it still remains.

British Steel brought us a new Judas Priest. A band that was a bit tighter and rocked a bit harder. Wade Babineau: British Steel was the album that moved Priest to headliners after the success of Hell Bent For Leather. Essentially my hard rock/metal years began in junior high starting in 1982, so I got a lot of the great stuff when it first hit the shelves.

Predating Metallica's self-titled blockbuster by 11 years, Judas Priest's British Steel was a similarly pitched landmark boasting many of the same accomplishments. It streamlined and simplified the progressive intricacies of a band fresh off of revolutionizing the entire heavy metal genre; it brought an aggressive, underground metal subgenre crashing into the mainstream (in Priest's case, the NWOBHM; in Metallica's, thrash); and it greatly expanded the possibilities for heavy metal's commercial viability as a whole

Judas Priest’s attack, which was fueled by K. K. Downing and Glenn Tipton’s screaming lead guitars, underwent a big makeover on British Steel. Ditching the prog complexities of its predecessors, the album is streamlined and hook-driven, with serrated rockers featuring Rob Halford spitting anti-establishment venom like a street punk ( Breaking the Law ), mechanically hammering anthems with chanted choruses that champion metal mayhem ( Living After Midnight ), and riff-slashers with a cold, chiseled production that helped establish the ’80s heavy. metal sound ( Metal Gods ).

British Steel" was a kick in the teeth that the band desperately needed to survive. Although they were a decade old, established, and had a solid fanbase, it wasn't until the rise of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal that the band found real commercial success. This 2001 remastering of that album does it justice and reminds all listeners new and old that Judas Priest is one of the most important bands not only in heavy metal, but in music as a whole.
