War. Release Date 1983.

War is the third studio album by Irish rock band U2. It was produced by Steve Lillywhite, and was released on 28 February 1983 on Island Records. The album is regarded as U2's first overtly political album, in part because of songs like "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Year's Day", as well as the title, which stems from the band's perception of the world at the time; lead vocalist Bono stated that "war seemed to be the motif for 1982.

Sunday Bloody Sunday - War. Two Hearts Beat As One. New Year's Day. War (Remastered) Deluxe News. War," released early in 1983, was U2's fullest and loudest album yet - an album that started to separate the band from their New Wave peers. On this album, U2 both embraced and began wrestling with the identity of a Band with a Mission. Prior to this, their albums had featured oblique statements or pictures of uncertainty (the turmoil of adolescence on "Boy", the spiritual uncertainty of "October"). On "War," the band clearly and defiantly wrestled with the punk rock questions of politics, war, and personal/national identity.

The energy and insistence of the opener is sustained across the album. Two Hearts Beat As One" and "New Year's Day" are thrilling, finally showing the intense passion Bono's voice was capable of imparting when he had the right words to wrap it around. The U2 we've known ever since had arrived on War, and even today it sounds vital. As much as cynical critics and listeners often swipe at U2 for their earnestness, it's still refreshing to hear a band that cares so much, wants to be heard by so many, and isn't afraid to show it.

War’ was a loud and clear statement that U2 were ready for the world. Published on. March 12, 2019. The next time we heard from them on an album, they had developed into something more outspoken, more political and even more muscular. The message went out, just like the title says, with a single released on New Year’s Day, 1983. Fearlessly addressing the Polish Solidarność movement that dominated the headlines of the period, it proved that political motivation and rock credibility can be bedfellows after all.

From the outset, U2 went for the big message - every song on their debut album Boy sounds huge, with oceans of processed guitars cascading around Bono's impassioned wail. It was an inspired combination of large, stadium-rock beats and post-punk textures. Without the Edge's echoed, ringing guitar, U2 would have sounded like a traditional hard rock band, since the rhythm section and Bono treat each song as an anthem.

I love that album, my 2nd favourite after 'Boy'. It's just such a strong album before all the Eno ambient stuff kicked in, my favourite era.

The band's first live album was comprised of music from three performances from the War Tour. The live version of Electric C. which was recorded at the Rockpalast concert in Lorelei, Germany on August 20, 1983, had a snippet of Stephen Sondheim's Send In The Clowns and I Want To Live In America from West Side Story. These were removed from later pressings for legal reasons. Under A Blood Red Sky was voted as No. 1 Best Album and Best LP Sleeve in the Hot Press reader's poll. The album peaked at N. on the UK album charts and remained on the charts for a total of 192 weeks. In the US, it reached as high as N. 3 on the album charts.

War became the first U2 album to crack the Top 40 (it made it to No. 12), thanks to the constant exposure the band received from MTV's full-force embrace throughout 1983. The live record culled from performances on the career-making tour in support of War, Under a Blood Red Sky, helped seal their image and legacy when it was released in November. MTV was all over that too, airing clips of Bono already in total command of the stage and his persona. From here, things got bigger, better and more complex
