Top of the Pops is the name of a series of records issued by Pickwick Records on their Hallmark label, which contain anonymous cover versions of recent and current hit singles. The recordings were intended to replicate the sound of the original hits as closely as possible.
The album contained versions, of varying degrees of accuracy, of such recent favourites from the hit parade as Middle Of The Road’s ‘Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep,’ Hurricane Smith’s ‘Don’t Let It Die,’ T. Rex’s ‘Get It On’ and the Rolling Stones’ ‘Street Fighting Man’ - all gamely performed, if unlikely to convince diehard fans. The 20th volume in the ‘Top Of The Pops’ series also made the chart summit that November, before the chart ruling was revoked, after the major companies complained that the budget releases had an unfair pricing advantage.
It was a single-oriented era-a startlingly inventive period following the initial explosion of rock’n’roll but before the album became dominant-when entire new genres seemed to bubble up every few months. The ’60s marked a time when pop music became more than a teenage fad, turning into an important art form in its own right as it soundtracked the civil rights movement, the hippie heyday, and the Vietnam War.
The self-titled album from this Jonas Brother was accompanied by a flurry of pictures where he appeared in various stages of undress. His self-titled effort from 2014 is not just his attempt to establish his bona fides as a sex symbol; it's also his attempt to plant a flag in R&B's fertile soil. That Nick has had a penchant for the funky has been obvious for years; recall that in 2009, he made an album with a clutch of former Prince sidemen. The band's debut album reveals how much range Chaidez possesses as a pop star. Bookended by sinewy dance track "Like A Stranger" and the stark "Apples and Cigarettes," punctuated by "G a gorgeous rainbow swirl of fuzzed-out guitars and teary goodbyes, Kitten doesn't have a defining genre. But it provides a platform for Chaidez to show off her impressive pipes and her willingness to use them in whatever way strikes her fancy.
The Jam, The Specials, Madness, Elvis Costello, Squeeze, Gary Numan, Chic and many more. 1964 to 1975 - Big Hits. With The Rolling Stones, Tom Jones, Status Quo, Procol Harum, Stevie Wonder and The Kinks.
A last farewell gift from the band in the year Weller spectacularly announced his departure from it, Dig the New Breed is a sometimes rough around the edges live overview of the band's work, from small club dates in 1979 to much larger venues in 1982. Recording quality throughout is quite excellent - it's not specified whether the band always recorded its shows with such care and just had a mountain of tapes to work through, but the end results are quite enjoyable. It's not a perfect album, admittedly, though that's due in large part to the sheer number of memorable songs.
