Mott the Hoople is the debut studio album by the band of the same name. It was produced by Guy Stevens and released in 1969 by Island Records in the UK (cat. no. ILPS 9108), and in 1970 by Atlantic Records in the US (cat. SD 8258). It was subsequently re-released by Angel Air in 2003 (SJPCD157).
All these changes are evident from the moment Brain Capers kicks in with the monumental "Death May Be Your Santa Claus," a phenomenally pile-driving number that just seems inevitable. As it gives way to a cover of Dion's "Your Own Backyard," it becomes clear that Mott have pulled off the trick of being sensitive while still rocking. And that's not the end of it - they ride an epic wave on the nine-minute "The Journey," pull off a love song on "Sweet Angeline," and generally rock like hell throughout the record.

Mott always opened the second side of their records with something strong and rocking and "Sweet Angeline" (nothing to do with ol' big-lips) is no exception. It's a solid rocker that was featured in their live shows until the end. "Second Love" & "The Moon Upstairs" are both fine tunes as well but, please forgive the closing selection as it is a short piece of insanity tacked on by producer Guy Stevens. Funny enough but it does quiver
Now comes album number four, Brain Capers ( dedicated to James Dean ), and I like it. It features two more resuscitations, Dion’s Your Own Backyard and Jesse Colin Young’s Darkness, Darkness, plus a half-dozen homegrown efforts. As usual, Mott’s covers are better than good, Backyard with Verden Allen’s surging, swirling organ and Ian Hunter’s splendid voice taking the lyrics straight (even if you still don’t believe it), and Darkness building from Youngbloods-light to Cream-thick around Mick Ralphs’ softer voice and the mysterious Ruffin’s admirably flashing and flailing drums
