He left the Chicago Symphony in the status of Great, and Sir George Solti took them to the nextlevel, "world Class," much due to their wildly successful 1971 Europeean tour and the many splendid Mahler and Strauss recording they did. For me, Daniel barenboim seemed a conducctor ofmassive talent, as well as a fine pianist, but one who perhaps didn't have the commitment to Chicago I would have liked to see.
Also sprach Zarathustra prepares to take its leave and the orchestra ascends towards the outer reaches of the cosmos. Celestial woodwinds, their piquant dissonances voiced to induce fluttering harmonic interference, spacewalk towards pure B major triads as earthbound lower strings outline the fading memory of a C‑centred motif – C‑G‑C – which, 30 minutes earlier, we heard climbing like a flash of pure primary colour through the trumpet section. In 1935 Serge Koussevitzky and the Boston Symphony Orchestra cut the first recording of Also sprach Zarathustra, and it still stands up to scrutiny remarkably well. The BPO attack with a rougher grain than the VPO but Koussevitzky finds a greater emotional range than Strauss can muster. Fritz Reiner returned to Also sprach Zarathustra often but it’s his 1954 recording with the Chicago SO that stands out. This isn’t flawless.
Zarathustra was the first to consider the fight of good and evil the very wheel in the machinery of things: the transposition of morality into the metaphysical realm, as a force, cause, and end in itself, is his work Zarathustra's Roundelay is set as part of Gustav Mahler's Third Symphony (1895–6), originally under the title What Man Tells Me, or alternatively What the Night Tells Me (Of Man). Frederick Delius based his major choral-orchestral work A Mass of Life (1904–5) on texts from Thus Spoke Zarathustra. The work ends with a setting of Zarathustra's roundelay which Delius had composed earlier, in 1898, as a separate work.
The legendary 1954 Fritz Reiner/Chicago Symphony Orchestra performance of the Richard Strauss war horse Also Sprach Zarathustra. Recorded directly to 2-track analog by Jack Pfeiffer, the original session tapes were used in mastering these LP and SACD reissues. Packaged in the original tip-on jacket facsimiles that precisely duplicate the original cover art, including the "Living Stereo" logo, LSC numbers and "Shaded Dog" label. These new versions are clearer than the originals and warmer and richer than past reissues! SACD playable on all CD players
Richard Strauss (1864-1949): Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30: 1. Chicago Symphony Orchestra Fritz Reiner, Dirigent. Digitally remastered. Chicago marked the confluence of two distinct, but intermingling musical strains in Chicago, IL, in the mid-'60s: an academic approach and one coming from the streets. Reed player Walter Parazaider (born March 14, 1945, in Chicago, IL), trumpeter Lee Loughnane (born October 21, 1946, in Chicago, IL), and trombonist James Pankow (born August 20, 1947, in St. Louis, MO) were all music students at DePaul University. Chicago II vaulted into the Top Ten in its second week on the Billboard chart, even before its first single, 'Make Me Smile,' hit the Hot 100.
