The Temptations Do the Temptations is a 1976 album by The Temptations for the Gordy (Motown) label. The album was the group's final release from its original Motown tenure; the Temptations contract was terminated from Motown after release of this album. The group enjoyed the greatest creative control of their career, producing and writing most of the tracks, the album received virtually no promotional support from Motown, who didn't like the fact that the Tempts had such creative freedom over the album.

The title of this album is deceiving; it would have one think that these are songs the group recorded on prior albums. But to the contrary, these are songs assembled specifically for this recording, never before recorded by the Tempts. During a period when they were struggling to remain a quintet, they were also struggling to find material that was appealing to their audience and conducive to their sound. They managed to assemble a series of songs that featured only one single, "Who Are You," to appear on the Billboard R&B charts ( 12 weeks)

A compact disc double album version was issued in 1986, including five additional tracks recorded between 1973 and 1984

The Temptations went through personnel changes themselves, the first twelve tracks on the disc comprising songs from their "classic line-up" of David Ruffin, Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks, Otis Williams, and Melvin Franklin. The disc contains sixteen top ten Rhythm and Blues singles chart hits, and seventeen Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 enjoyed by the Temptations and released on the Motown associate label Gordy Records imprint. Starting in the late 1960s and early 1970s, standard industry practice shifted to a focus on album sales, where a single became less a separate entity and more simply an advertisement for an LP, and a lead single would be pulled off an album as a promotional tool. Prior to this, singles were concentrated upon as a profitable commodity, especially for smaller record labels, and albums were often built around already successful singles.
