Sister Sledge is an American musical group formed in 1971, and originally consisted of sisters Debbie, Joni, Kathy, and Kim. Known for their work with Chic in the late-1970s, Sister Sledge reached the height of their popularity during the disco era. The group was formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1971, when their ages ranged from 12 to 1. In 1972, Sister Sledge signed with ATCO Records and recorded its second single, "Weatherman," which was followed by The Jackson 5-like "Mama Never Told Me" in 1973. It wasn't until 1979, when Chic leaders Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards produced "We Are Family", that Sister Sledge really exploded commercially. He's the Greatest Dancer" and the album's eponymous single both reached number one on the R&B charts, in the US. In 1989, Kathy left the group to pursue a solo career.

The band’s first album, Circle of Love, was released in 1975, but the group didn’t achieve major success until 1979’s We Are Family, which was produced by hitmakers Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards. The album produced two huge hits. The first single, He’s the Greatest Dancer, moved from the disco clubs to the pop charts, where it reached No. 9. The song’s distinctive rhythm track was later sampled by Will Smith for the 1997 hit Gettin’ Jiggy Wit’ It.
The Sledge sisters soulful vocals make this album a notch above CHIC’s own albums, the arrangements of piano, crisp rhythm guitar, thumping bass and a warm strings sound are timeless. Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic produced this masterpiece for Sister Sledge. Easily the groups best release and not a weak track on the album. 2 Kathie, Jodi, Debra, and Kim Sledge has started recordings as Sister Sledge as teenagers in 1971. Based in Philadelphia they released some material on the Money Back label and worked as back up singers for Gamble & Huff’s Philadelphia International. After signing to Atlantic in 1973, they had some minor success with the proto disco record Love Don’t Go Through No Changes On Me and Mama Never Told Me which reached the UK top 20 in 1975.
Sister Sledge is four sisters whose last names really are Sledge. They were a backup band for various artists before releasing this album, which was their first. This was their biggest hit; their first single, "He's The Greatest Dancer," was also a Top-10 hit in the US. This was written and produced by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers. The group recorded this in one take. Kathy Sledge, who sang lead, did not know the lyrics ahead of time. Rodgers and Edwards gave her each line through her headphones as it came up to make it sound spontaneous. This was used in commercials for an early version of Diet Pepsi called Pepsi Free, with the obvious line, "We are Pepsi Free.
