Carlos García Montoya (13 December 1903 – 3 March 1993) in Madrid, Spain, was a prominent flamenco guitarist and a founder of the modern-day popular flamenco style of music. He was the nephew of renowned flamenco guitarist Ramón Montoya. He first learned from his mother, "la Tula", and then from a neighboring barber, Pepe el Barbero, .

An album of discount flamenco from Carlos Montoya and a trio of other guitarists. The first half is taken up by pieces performed by the ageless Montoya and the second half performed by El Pili, Enrique Montoya, and El Nino de Alicante, along with a dancer adding the jaleos and castanets. Montoya performs excellently, as one would expect given his status in the history of flamenco.

El Pili, Enrique Montoya, El Nino De Alicante - Guitars, Anita Ramos - Castanets). Set track as current obsession.

This Montoya album easily meets or exceeds that standard. Track 5 "Alegria", alone, at a running time of over 9 minutes, is more than worth the price of this CD. Others tracks of that caliber follow, though not for quite as long. Montoya noticeably "sparks" when he's joined by dancers and singers on stage. The only way to listen to this music is to turn it up more than a bit to bring yourself closer to the reality of a "live" performance. There are many great Flamenco guitar masters. Each seems to have a different sensibility. Carlos Montoya is very exciting. Lots of strumming and quick changes in rhythm and tone.

Carlos Montoya has been disdained by some in the "flamenco community" for his allegedly unorthodox style and his "commercialization" of flamenco. Yet Shankar did more to open the ears of western listeners to Indian raga than any 50 of his contemporaries playing in India at the time. This album offers an excellent sampling of some of Montoya's best recordings, mostly of the 1950s and 60s. Considering that many of these recordings were made in concert situations under less than ideal acoustical conditions, the digitally reprocessed sound is quite good. More importantly, the music is excellent, and many of these pieces capture something of the spontaneity of their live performance.

Carlos Montoya, a guitarist and composer who played an important role in transforming flamenco from a localized Spanish folk form into a style with an international following, died on Wednesday. He was 89 and lived in Wainscott, . The cause of death was heart failure, said his son Allan Montoya of Wainscott. Mr. Montoya was among the first flamenco guitarists to free his instrument from its accompanimental role in dance and vocal performances
