Nathaniel Adams Coles (March 17, 1919 – February 15, 1965), known professionally as Nat King Cole, was an American jazz pianist and vocalist. He recorded over one hundred songs that became hits on the pop charts. His trio was the model for small jazz ensembles that followed. Cole also acted in films and on television and performed on Broadway. He was the first African American man to host an American television series.

Cole's vocals are impeccable and swinging, while his piano alternates between providing subdued backgrounds and light solos that don't reveal his true potential on the instrument. Willie Smith's smooth alto sax buoys the singer in the brisk take of "Just You, Just M. Harry "Sweets" Edison's muted trumpet complements the leader in his interpretation of "Sweet Lorraine.

Music fans born after 1960 are less likely to be aware that Nat King Cole began his career as an influential jazz pianist, so much so that the great Art Tatum and the up-and-coming Oscar Peterson formed trios similar to Cole’s.

Music fans born after 1960 are less likely to be aware that Nat King Cole began his career as an influential jazz pianist, so much so that the great Art Tatum and the up-and-coming Oscar Peterson formed trios similar to Cole’s.

He wasn't jazzy enough to satisfy many, not white enough to please the pop cultural obsession with Anglo- and Euro-American stardom. In answer to all of this, Cole simply proceeded, crooning beautifully even after he'd walked away from the piano and become primarily a vocal sensation. This 1956 collection is famous as Cole's riposte to the critique that he wasn't jazzy. You could say "After Midnight" is Cole's "Get Back" album, a return to his jazz roots. Just You, Just Me" and "I Know That You Know" were in the original trio's repertoire as instrumentals; here they are given vocal treatments. The rest of the tunes were new to Cole.

After more than a decade of success as a jazz pianist leading his own trio, he became a pop singer. The results are difficult to argue with: chart-toping singles and albums spread over two decades, during which he ranked alongside Frank Sinatra. His creamy voice and flawless phrasing made him a master of romantic ballads, and some songs - "Mona Lisa," "Route 66," "It's Only a Paper Moon" - are simply considered his. Just One of Those Things and After Midnight were two rather different collections released in the same year, 1957. All of Analogue Productions' Nat "King" Cole releases go the extra mile. They come with well-done booklets that discuss in detail each album's history and the remastering wizardry responsible for their sonics. The sleeves are nothing special in terms of their paper stock or graphics, but that's the only nit I can pick regarding these extraordinary reissues.
