Equally compelling are Green Thoughts' curveballs, like the countryish "Something New," the lovely ballad "Especially for You," and the dark, atmospheric "Deep Black," all of which deliver intriguing variations on the Smithereens' basic power pop formula.

11 is the third full-length album by The Smithereens, released on October 18, 1989 (see 1989 in music). It includes the Billboard Top 40 single "A Girl Like You". The album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in June 1990. The album title was inspired by the film Ocean's 11, "with a little push from Spinal Tap's famous line, "This one goes to 11", according to guitarist Jim Babjak.

The Smithereens' second album release, Green Thoughts, is another great album and ranks just a shade below their debut Especially for You as their best. Pat DiNizio constructs another batch of songs with memorable melodies and personal lyrics. Green Thoughts doesn't rock as hard as Especially for You or their next album, 11, but the craftsmanship is still there.

Green Thoughts is THE quintessential Smithereens album. Everything that makes the Smithereens great is here in abundance - guitars jangle buzz and chime, vocals burst in harmonies, and drums plonk, whack and boom groovily.

Released March 22, 1988. Green Thoughts Tracklist. 1. Only a Memory Lyrics. 2. House We Used to Live In Lyrics. 3. Something New Lyrics.

The single, "Only a Memory", reached No. 92 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Album Rock Tracks chart in 1988. The Smithereens had toured from May 1986 to September 1987 in support of their debut album, 1986's Especially for You. During the tour songwriter Pat DiNizio had been working on new song ideas for what was to become the Green Thoughts album.

Equally compelling are Green Thoughts' curveballs, like the countryish "Something New," the lovely ballad "Especially for You," and the dark, atmospheric "Deep Black," all of which deliver intriguing variations on the Smithereens' basic power pop formula.

Green Thoughts’ was the song I was in love with, or was it the melodic ‘Spellbound,’ no, I’m sure it was ‘House We Used to Live I. No matter, the whole album is exceptionally wonderful. There is no one like the Smithereens, they are a breed unto themselves, capturing the essence of true rock and roll. They draw from the 50’s in style and verse, but they’ve updated the sound, with the quality and elegance of their instruments. Just check out the guitars they use, these things were made during a day when each guitar was unique, when each guitar had its own sound and pitch. The music of The Smithereens can be dark or it can be bright, either way, it’s pure magic. These guys are the real thing, they won’t let you down. If it’s basic, laid bare, great rock and roll you’re looking for, then these are your guys, do not except substations. They are so tight, bouncing off each other, playing to the audience, just giving it all they’ve got one hundred percent of the time. There is nothing they do in the studio that they can not do on stage, there are no tricks or gimmicks.

Green Thoughts is THE quintessential Smithereens album. Everything that makes the Smithereens great is here in abundance - guitars jangle buzz and chime, vocals burst in harmonies, and drums plonk, whack and boom groovily. Green Thoughts is The Smithereen's second LP, and it's clearly amazing and defining of the alternative rock scene of the 80's. Like "Especially For You", the album really shines on its songwriting and cohesiveness. Pat DiNizio continues to tell us every sad story about love, so it's definitely for those who are heartbroken and pensive. However, many of the songs are very catchy, and it's a good album to leave on regardless of the mood
