Children" is an instrumental composition by Italian composer Robert Miles. It was first released in Italy in January 1995 as part of the EP Soundtracks on Joe Vannelli's DBX label, but it did not chart. Vanelli brought the track to a nightclub in Miami where it was heard by Simon Berry of Platipus Records. Berry worked with Vannelli and James Barton (of Liverpool's Cream nightclub) to release the song in November 1995 as the lead single from his album Dreamland.

Omg :( / Robert Miles - Children (Dream Vrs.) Thanxx Robert !
Jockahougu
What a piece of crap, the original is, rightly so, a justified 'classic', this remix is piss poor...
Xaluenk
Horrible. You simply can't do that to such a classic.
Mysterious Wrench
this is utterly embarrassing, delete this awful noise from existence.

I am very disappointed about... that...What's this ?Please, don't do that !!!

awful remix, embarrassing to put something out like this .

Seeing as Robert Miles died recently - I'd thought I'd review this wonderful track from back in the day. I'm not really much a fan of Trance (more of a Breakbeats, Funk and House person) but I have to admit this is a great tune with a very iconic melody with some slick production to boot. Always remember this tune being used a lot on adverts back in the day and the track has aged incredibly well for a track from 1995.RIP Robert Miles - Let your music live on forever!

Part of guitar work is surely taken and reworked from the bass guitar/synth of first track of this release:https://www.discogs.com/Patrick-OHearn-Ancient-Dreams/master/33989

RIP Robert Miles. Children is one of my absolute favourite tracks!

Children was a big big summer hit across Europe in 1996.Sad that Robert Miles passed away to soon at the age of 47.R.I.P Robert Cocina:-(

Isn't the first part of the voice in the Message version a bit out of key (off-key)? Anyways I don't really like the Message version at all.

Found a very interesting fact about Children: The main piano riff that myself and many other people fell in love with is in fact, sampled off an obscure Russian Rock song by the name of "Napoi Menia Vodoi" ("Quench My Thirst") by Garik Sukachov. I was very surprised to have stumbled across this fact looking at the Robert Miles "Children" wiki (At time of writing). I quickly Googled the song to listen to it on Youtube, and there is indeed a striking resemblance. I've browsed the Robert Miles - "Children" page many times before. But never stumbled across this obscure fact.Link to song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5eCLUqK6IY (Skip to 1:23)This Russian Rock song was released in 1988. At least 7 years before the debut of "Children". Very few people know about this little trivia. There is also a chance that the melody was influenced from another Russian musical piece as well.Casually browsing for more information, I discovered that the guitar riffs from "Children" are also sampled from another track: Patrick O' Hearn - Ancient Dreams (1985) Now that I think about it, this track might have influnced Garik's "Napoi Menia Vodoi" to begin with, seeing how it was released first.Link to track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vkle9ODO2OcI have had in mind that Italians are notorious for ripping off excepts from other pieces and creating new pieces. Though I with pure ignorance thought "Children" was a unique piece of music. It took me almost 10 years to figure out that "Children" was all along a sample fest. I still enjoy "Children" to this day, though ever since I made this discovery. I will give Robert Miles a lot less credit than I beforehand did. To make things even worse, Robert was apparently accused by Hearn in 1997 due to obvious copyright infringement. Seeing how Robert apparently never got permission from Hearn and Hearn was not happy with the end result Robert had created. Funny how many DJ's / Musicians have sampled from, or have created many inferior remixes of "Children" ever since it's popularity reached. I haven't even mentioned the rip off tracks other musicians made during the popularity of "Children" Likely trying to capitalize on "Childrens" success. These tracks I'm referring to are not "Children" remixes. Though they sound very similar. Two examples I'll give are DJ Data - Grand Piano (1996) and Phina - Ironic (1996) (Which BTW is a rip off of another song!) Yet, the real truth about "Children" is known by few people.DJ Data - Grand Piano: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSxE3T43O1sPhina - Ironic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx-qwZoZ8wMArticle related to Robert's Plagiarism: http://www.mtv.com/news/1432181/children-composer-accused-of-plagiarism/Bottom Line: I BELIEVE IN NOTHING!

Oakenfold opened up with this at a club in Birmingham in 1995 that was aired on Radio 1's essential mix. The mix he played was a mash up of the vocal and guitar versions and is awesome.......the intro of the vocal version but with the guitar rift in the background. I think it might be something that he did in the studio for himself as I have never hear anyone else play it.......anyone have any ideas about this track?
caif
Sounded like the Message Version on the Deconstruction release to me
Jack
I found this in a charity shop two days and I have just finished to this CD Single. The 'Eat Me Edit' is simply the commercial radio edit for the song that we all know and love, which has that instantly-recogniseable classic piano melody! The 'Dream Version' is the original extended version of the radio edit. The 'Guitar Mix' is actually the original mix of the song, which accentuates an acoustic guitar-esque synth melody (as opposed to the classic piano melody of the first two tracks), which sounds very similar to the 'acoustic guitar' synth sound at the beginning of the Eat Me Edit and the Dream Version. In the middle of the song, it has this funny-sounding high-pitched synth, which sounds a bit like a duck quacking. The 'Message Version' is practically the polar opposite to the first three mixes because it is actually a vocal version of the song and it has a slightly darker and moodier feel than the other three mixes. It has both word-spoken lyrics and melodic singing and it has a powerful message about love, hate and war. I also really like the synth-melody in this version. The first two mixes are my two personal favourites, but all mixes on the CD are great! This was an excellent buy and I would recommend this any of fans of the song, of Trance music and of Robert Miles' music will enjoy all four tracks.

This is probably the best pressed 12" I have in my entire collection.

Before this track became overplayed and chopped into a cheap nasty radio edit this was a hugely respected and sought after track. When this was released on Platipus, DJ's were literally clambering over each other at the counter to get hold of a copy in my local record store. I'm lucky enough to have grabbed one of those myself at that time and won't be parting with it anytime soon. Much ridiculed after it's release and subsequent fame and overplaying but a track that actually has aged very well after all this time.
SmEsH
"Much ridiculed after it's release and overplaying", also applies to instrumental commercial Dance hits such as Darude - Sandstorm, Avicii - Levels and Martin Garrix - Animals. The difference being is that this track, Sandstorm and Levels are three of my favourite Dance tracks ever, but I'm not really very keen on Animals tbh! Btw, I really can't believe how hated Sandstorm, Levels and Children are, a lot of people must be really ignorant and stupid because all three are really great commercial Dance hits, I don't care what anybody says!

This release sold around 3,000 copies. Platipus signed the tune after hearing it being played on acetate in a club in Florida.

I don't care what people say about this track. It's one of the best commercial electronic music recordings I have ever listen to. It started my passion for electronic music. It helped me discover much more obscure dream house tunes as I searched desperately for similar sounding piano trance tunes. Most important it drove me into discovering great underground music and not some commercial turd. I admit it has aged a bit, but I don't think I will ever find a commercial recording from this decade that sounds better than "Children" You can literally listen to Children hundreds of times and still feel nostalgia. I think most of the people that bash this tune are folks that hate commercially successful hits. You must also remember that the vast majority of Dream house never saw the light of day, was released mainly in Italy, and pressed mostly on vinyl in low numbers. At least Children helped the obscure genre by a freakin lot. I would be pissed as hell if this tune was pressed in low numbers, only on 12" and came from a very small obscure sub label (Some sub label from Discomagic for example.)
Kagalkree
Gee, I really didn't know this was a particulary hated track! This track has obviously received the same sort of popularity, hate and overplaying that other commercial instrumental dance tracks like Darude - Sandstorm, Avicii - Levels and Martin Garrix - Animals did many years later. "Most of the people that bash this tune are folks that hate commercially successful hits", also applies to Sandstorm, Levels and Animals! Except, I really like Children, Sandstorm and Levels, but I have never really liked Animals much! Sure, this track doesn't particularly sound like Sandstorm, Levels or Animals, but it has the same sort of negative reputation and commercial success that those three other tracks also had.
Drelalen
How can nobody of commented on this ? my god Im not the biggest fan of this track, but this is a total classic and amazingly produced.
betelgeuze
About as "soulful" as the NCIS theme tune...... Cheesy & commercial & therefore loved by many.
Ironrunner
The commercialization killed it, but for those of us who had picked up on it before it hit the pop charts (I grabbed a copy when Platipus licensed it), it did sound pretty special.
MeGa_NunC
This track has received the same sort of fame/hate/overplaying that Darude - Sandstorm, Avicii - Levels and Martin Garrix - Animals have many years later! "Don't hate it, just because it's too popular" applies to Sandstorm and Levels because I love these this and those two tracks and they clearly don't deserve the hate that they are getting. And yes, this is so much better than Animals is (in my opinion) because I don't like Animals much and love this track!
Laizel
I've thought the same sort of thing about Martin Garrix - Animals, but Robert Miles - Children is MUCH better than Animals is! Look at Animals' discogs page, it's full of hate comments- http://www.discogs.com/Martin-Garrix-Animals/master/604622
Zodama
still much more better than many stupid cheesy & commercial music tunes nowadaysdon't hate it,just because it's too popular....it's out of what "robert miles" expect about this release. commercial is bad, agree, but doesn't mean all bad, rarely you see good music, this release is one big example
Gravelblade
A True classic for sure! I dont think there has been a piece of trance music that incorporates a piano and an offbeat bassline to such wonderfull effect. Normally a track like this which is played so often, you can easily get sick of but Children is one of those tunes I will never tire of. A good sign of things to come from a label that still went on to release some of the best underground trance.
PC-rider
If i was asked what's my favourite song, i would probably answer it's impossible to say. But if I just had to, i guess 'Children' from Robert Miles could well be the answer. The dream version is the true gem, the song that was played on radio stations. However the true original and the message version are also fantastic. No other song means more to me than this one, probably the most important reason for making me interested in electronic music, especially trance music. Whenever i hear this, i think of my whole life, my childhood and my love for electronic music. Impossible to describe in words, deeply moving music that makes you cry. I feel sorry for those who can't appreciate this treasure.
Adoranin
man If I had to write a review for this track, I'd say these exact words that are yours...it's my first ever record and I'll never forget it! It still makes me dream!cheers
Steelcaster
There was a period of a few months between late summer 1995 and early 1996 when we Platipus fans were all raving about this track. It was so obvious from the very first listen that it would be picked up by a major label and become a huge hit. During these months I don't remember anybody saying a bad word for this record. I used to delight in playing this loudly months before it became a hit, just to give my neighbours a taste of what was to come. Years on, this track still proves to be part of dance music heritage, and still stops you dead in your tracks.

"If all the children of the world held each others hands, they'll be giving off such a strength that all the walls of hate, war, and racism. Children know, understand, and believe, that there will be more, love and peace, for eternity, love and peace, for everybody." And that's just the beginning. The Vocal Mix (possibly the same as the Message Mix found on other labels) features a lot of "spoken word" segments, not sung but simply stated in an awkward way by an unknown lady. Toss in a diva belting out "Love and peace, love and peace, for everybody" and a staccato vocal snippet, and you have the additional bits. The spoken word vocals don't really blend with the song, and the other vocals are just cheesy - dance divas are nothing new. Plus, Robert Miles was a bit late on the holding hands to change the world - Hands Across America was in 1986, and the U.S.A. is still rife with hunger and homelessness. Maybe kids have some innate "Care Bear Stare" ability? The Remix and Guitar Mix are better, if nothing else, for the lack of vocals.
Ddilonyne
You are comparing a simple piano track over a beat to humanitarian events?! Too funny. USA for Africa and glow pops for Italians. One in peace lol
Cildorais
Well said mate. He shouldnt comment on here if its not his taste in music. END OF ! :) glad we got good tastes :))
Usanner
You just don't know what you're talking about. If you don't like the vocal version fine, but the dream version it's a true masterpiece, so simple but yet so heart touching. Of course that's for the ones who can appreciate this piece of art. Obviously you're not one of them.

'Children', without any doubt whatsoever, put the Progressive-related style of House music called, 'Dream' on the map. Though it is now clear that Robert Miles did not actually create ‘Dreamhouse’. The creation of ‘Children’ stems from Miles viewing war images, with this horrifying imagery forever in Roberts mind, he set out to create [without any preconceived ideas] a track close to his heart. Miles began with a simple Piano piece with the main notes been A, C, G, B - that he developed on a Kurzweil K2000 workstation/Sampler Robert also added Resonating synths and sweeps to create a truly dreamy soundscape, in addition to Roberts programming he also combined acoustic guitars and finally a fairly moderate but still upbeat programmed House/Trance beat for the clubbers. Robert has explained he wanted to calm the clubbers a little after his Trance DJ Mixes. So the result is a beautiful 'Dreamhouse' track that has touched many ‘Chillout generation’ listeners and Ravers alike. 10 years young, this masterpiece will never grow old. Essential track for House fans!
Livina
A perfect example of dance music snobbery: Record is released on obscure italian label (DBX): Everyone loves it Record is licensed to credible trance label (Platipus): Everyone loves it Record is licensed to major label, becomes big hit: suddenly every doesnt like it pfff...this was a great record, this is a great record, this always shall be a great record. Like all the great tracks its deceptively simple but that piano hooks you in straight away and sounded awesome over a big system. Unfortunately the legion of 'Dream House' sub-standard copies and a poor series of follow-ups by Miles himself sullied the memory of this dance music landmark.
