Gunga Din" is an 1890 poem by Rudyard Kipling, set in British India. The poem is much-remembered by its final line: "You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din", often quoted in the UK in reaction to self-praise. Tho' I've belted you and flayed you, By the livin' Gawd that made you, You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din! from "Gunga Din".

In the final lines of An Irish Airman Forsees His Death, the speaker reveals that his thoughts in the final moments of his life were of his initial reasons for joining in the fight and risking his life. Although he has already said that he joined the Air Force on impulse, these lines reveal the true source of the deep rooted impulse to risk his life. After having thought about it all, and balanced all, he comes to the realization that the years behind him and the years in front of him were but a waste of breath. In essence, he concludes that everything is meaningless. If his life is short.

The speaker begins with a certainty: he knows he will meet his fate "somewhere among the clouds above. Fate" can mean any number of things, but in a poem with "death" in the title it mean. xactly that. Sub in "I know that I shall meet my death" and you see how cheerful these opening lines are. Sheesh. As for that bit about the clouds above, the speaker is an airman.

The speaker, an Irish airman (Robert Gregory) fighting in World War I, who is still confused with the reason for fighting. He possessed psychic second sight which gave him intuition of his death, states that he knows he will die fighting among the clouds. He clarifies the reason for fighting is not a political one, nor the patriotic feeling to England, nor the hatred for the Germans. It was rather ‘a lonely impulse of delight’. Yeats writes in the first person persona of the airman while he is going to fight in the sky. Cite this Page! Sharma, . Gunga Din carried him away, but the native was struck with a bullet. Right before he died he got the soldier inside and said he hoped he had enjoyed his drink. He will get a swig in Hell from the native, and, he concludes, Gunga Din is a better man than he. Analysis. Unfortunately the native's heroic act is his last, for "a bullet came an' drilled the beggar clean". The soldier is very grateful to Gunga Din and ends the last stanza of the poem by proclaiming him a "better man than I am, Gunga Din!"

The Sh!thouse poet will never die, A monument will be built to the sky. A tribute to his brilliant wit, A statue made of solid sh!t. Some come here to sit and think, Others come to sh!t and stink. I just come to read the walls, Sit on my arse and scratch my balls. E put me safe inside, An' just before 'e died, "I 'ope you liked your drink", sez Gunga Din. So I'll meet 'im later on At the place where 'e is gone - Where it's always double drill and no canteen; 'E'll be squattin' on the coals Givin' drink to poor damned souls, An' I'll get a swig in hell from Gunga Din! Yes, Din! Din! Din! You Lazarushian-leather Gunga Din! Though I've belted you and flayed you, By the livin' Gawd that made you, You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din! Nov 20, 2009.
