Friedrich Gulda (16 May 1930 – 27 January 2000) was an Austrian pianist and composer who worked in both the classical and jazz fields. Born in Vienna the son of a teacher, Gulda began learning to play the piano from Felix Pazofsky at the Wiener Volkskonservatorium, aged 7. In 1942, he entered the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied piano and musical theory under Bruno Seidlhofer and Joseph Marx.

This rarity from European pianist Friedrich Gulda has yet to be reissued on CD. Teamed in a trio with bassist Jimmie Rowser and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath, Gulda explores five of his originals, including the side-long 20-minute "Suite 1962. Although "The Air From Other Planets" is a little spacey, most of the music is quite swinging, with the episodic "Suite 1962" being a definite highlight.

Keith Emerson performed it on Emerson, Lake & Palmer's The Return of the Manticore. In addition, Gulda composed Variations on The Doors' 'Light My Fire'. Another version can be found on Gulda's album As You Like It (1970), an album with standards such as 'Round Midnight and What Is This Thing Called Love?. In 1980, he wrote his Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra, which has been called as moving as it is lighthearted, in five movements involving jazz, a minuet, rock, a smidgen of polka,. In 1982, Gulda teamed up with jazz pianist Chick Corea, who was between the breakup of Return to Forever and the formation of his Elektric Band.

Friedrich Gulda, who first attempted to play in a jazz setting in the mid-'50s after firmly establishing his classical career, is on far stronger ground on this Columbia LP recorded in early 1965. Gulda's chops are very much in evidence throughout the sessions. In spite of the fact that he had not previously worked with bassist Bob Cranshaw, the two hit it off immediately, while drummer Albert 'Tootie' Heath had recently completed a tour with the pianist.

Classical pianist Friedrich Gulda became interested in jazz while visiting the United States during the 1950s, and recorded a live jazz album at Birdland for RCA Victor in 1956, though it would be over six years before he recorded another jazz LP. This pair of big-band sessions features two extended works by the pianist. He switches to an uptempo hard bop setting for the final section. The second side of the LP features "Music for Soloist and Big Band," which showcases trombone, baritone sax, and trumpet, though it isn't clear who is featured among the trombonists and trumpeters (the baritone saxophonist is Gulda, who started playing the instrument just a few years earlier). Gulda's writing is much more interesting in this extended work, as the band's members, including clarinetist Fatty George, are sharing the spotlight with the leader in this pianoless chart.
