Russ Freeman (born February 11, 1960) is a smooth jazz guitarist who is the founder and leader of the Rippingtons. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Freeman started on guitar when he was ten years old. Laid-Back/Mellow Reserved. Life in the Tropics - the first Peak Records release for the Rippingtons - features guitarist Russ Freeman and is a great smooth jazz celebration of rhythmic delights that resemble the tropical splendor of an island oasis. The natural beauty of each composition is reflected by the great talents of the Rippingtons: Kim Stone on bass, Dave Kochanski on keyboards, Ramon Yslas on percussion, and Dave Hooper on drums, along with special guests the great saxophonists Dave Koz, Eric Marienthal, and Paul Taylor, keyboardist Bob James, and guitarist Peter White

Russ Freeman writes all of the music for the Rippingtons, much of which falls in the pop/R&B genre. In the late '90s, the group moved over to the Windham Hill label, recording such albums as Black Diamond (1997), Topaz (1999), Live! Across America, and Life in the Tropics (both in 2000). For 2003's Let It Ripp, the band relied heavily on their horn section to carry the weight of the album. The Latin-flavored Wild Card followed in 2005. The band returned in 2009 with Modern Art. In 2011, The Rippington's released the South of France inspired Côte D'azur.

The Rippingtons are an American contemporary jazz group mainly relating to the genres smooth jazz, jazz fusion, jazz pop, and crossover jazz. Formed in 1985 by guitarist and band leader Russ Freeman, their career has spanned three decades. With a revolving door of musicians, Freeman has been the only consistent member. Many of their songs have been played during The Weather Channel's local on the 8's forecast segments
It's a Russ Freeman solo album brilliantly disguised as a Rippingtons featuring Russ Freeman album. There is no one with the surname of "Rippington" in The Rippingtons featuring Russ Freeman and there never has been. That's the best part of the joke Freeman has played since he dropped Moonlighting (GRP, 1987) on the heads of the contemporary jazz listener. The centerpiece of the album is the singularly impressive "We Will Live Forever" with its distinctly Native American vibe. But it's actually modern day technology as the flute sound is actually created by Freeman's synth guitar and the pounding, powerful percussion sounds like the work of a dozen drummers hard at work, but it's still just little old Russ showing off his studio wizardry.
