Here Come the Tubular Bells Japanese Breakfast's 'Soft Sounds From Another Planet' is less of a concept album about space exploration so much as it is a mood board come to life. Over the course of 12 tracks, Michelle Zauner explores a sonic landscape of her own design, one that's big enough to contain her influences. There are songs on this album that recall the pathos of Roy Orbison’s ballads, while others could soundtrack a cinematic drive down one of Blade Runner's endless skyways.

Japanese Breakfast is the solo musical project of musician Michelle Zauner. Under the alias, Zauner has released two studio albums: Psychopomp (2016) and Soft Sounds from Another Planet (2017). Before her solo project, Michelle Zauner fronted a solo project under the moniker Little Girl, Big Spoon. As a student at Bryn Mawr College, Zauner fronted Post Post, an indie pop band with other students from Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges.

Japanese Breakfast - The stage name of queer/bisexual pop artist Michelle Zauner. She is Korean-Jewish but states she chose her alias because she strongly identified with Japanese culture growing up because it was the closest mainstream thing she could find to Korean culture. Her debut album Psychopomp was released in 2016, followed by Soft sounds from another planet in 2017. Mykki Blanco - Black Jewish gay man & rapper. He currently uses he/him pronouns bur has used different ones throughout his career and briefly believed he was transgender.

The first Japanese Breakfast album Psychopomp was the best kind of bedroom pop record; fragile, intimate, and slightly weird. It drew from various indie pop tributaries and was built around Michelle Zauner's achingly pure vocals and her unique pop vision. On Soft Sounds from Another Planet, she and producer Craig Hendrix take the project out of the bedroom and aim for something larger. Much slicker and less wonky, the songs have a spacious, expansive sound that envelops the listener in warmth (even when the synths get a little chilly.

Psychopomp, Korean American Michelle Zauner’s 2016 debut as Japanese Breakfast, was an emotional response to her mother’s death from cancer. The follow-up finds the singer beginning the process of healing. The vast sonic palette perhaps mirrors the way that a devastating loss can heighten the senses. Fizzing electro, hazy shoegaze, funk basslines, electronica and even an 80s pop sax solo blend together into a bittersweet, happy-sad soundtrack. Where are you? she cries at one point; I never realised how much you were holding back, at another. Although it’s mostly dreamlike and existential,.

Mine came clean out of the box and plays well.
Elastic Skunk
I've just opened my copy that arrived and it was absolutely filthy straight out of the sleeve, ran it through a VC-S cleaning machine and after cleaning up it actually sounds pretty good, no hiss or noise, my system is really quite sensitive and revealing, so I won't call out it's names, just wanted to say the copy I received has no issues at all and sounds top notch.
Global Progression
Yours doesn’t have the right channel distortion on the last three tracks of Side A that’s well documented on this thread?
Finally had a chance to listen to this edition in full. It's a TERRIBLE release. Last two tracks on side A feature crazy distortion and the songs are ruined. But, noise and crackle are abundent throughout. This record is just totally screwed on wax, I'm afraid. I wrote Dead Oceans TWICE with zero response.
I just bought a copy at a show, and have exactly the same issues. Just reached out to the secretlystore, hoping to hear back...
Who pressed this? Where can I find this? Info please!
I purchased it on a recent tour stop in Denver.
It's a re-press that can be found on their website and I'm assuming on the current tour.
I have a mixed feelings for this pressing.. For me it is just so so.. It is not that great but nice to have lucky i bought it at retail price. Don't buy this album at a very high price it is not worth is in terms of sound quality
My copy sounds good, but I don't have the standard release to compare it to. I will say that my inner sleeve came completely fucked up including seam splits, creases, etc. Overall, this is nice, but I would recommend skipping it for what the flippers are charging here. It's not $50 nice.
The standard pressings have lots of hiss and quite a bit of distortion, especially on "Boyish" and the title track. Does this sound like yours at all?
I got the pink vinyl at her show and it is a brutal pressing.
Dead Oceans has been notorious for pressing out terrible records.. They should really consider changing pressing plant. The standard black record does not sound so good. My slowdive record from Dead Oceans is also terrible
The side-b on my red version sound completely off. Weird distortion and more that I cantt really describe.
Can confirm: great record, crappy pressing. Starts off decent, but the hiss gradually grows towards the end of each side. A5 and 6 are rendered basically unlistenable
If anyone is selling one of these copies please PM me! Also open to trades
Funny duck
This is back up on the label's site (probably not for long)
Great album, moving lyrics, beautiful voice, and entrancing music. My LP copy has a pretty savage, soft hiss though, don't know what that's about.
Yep a lot of hiss on mine as well, especially at the end of side B. It was so prominent I had to go back and check the digital version just to make sure it wasn't intentional!Glad to hear the other pressings have it to. Well, not glad, but at least I didn't spend money on an inferior version.
Skunk Black
And here you are admitting that the colored variant has mastering flaws, even though you're over on the Interpol listing trying to make a (feeble) case for colored vinyl. Sounds like someone is a bit confused :D
My local record shop had the red in stock (but only one copy) and I was tempted to buy it to see if it sounds the same...
My LP (black) also has a lot of noise. I was going to ask for a replacement but first I searched for "japanese breakfast lp noise" and this thread came up. So, that's not promising if other people have the same issue.I really love this album - I've listened to the downloaded tracks at least a dozen times and the noise is definitely not on those. Tonight was the first time I got a chance to play the record, and I was doing other stuff so I wasn't paying complete attention but I didn't notice the noise until the last two tracks on side A. It sounded like the record was dirty but I tried cleaning the record and needle. On side B it sounded OK at first but by the end of the side it was bad again. I'll have to listen again more closely. Here's a 2.5 second snippet I recorded from near the end (3:10) of track 5 "Soft Sounds from Another Planet": play it 3 times - stereo, then left channel only, then right. You can hear the noise is only on the left. Is this the same thing everyone else is hearing?Just to be sure, I put on a different album and do not hear any noise.
Same here but I thought it was down to the red vinyl. Your black is just the same? Not great. Even though it somehow does fit the music. Which is fantastic.
