Somnium (2001) is an album by the American ambient musician Robert Rich. It is a seven-hour album on a DVD-video that was partly inspired by Rich's sleep concert series of the early 1980s and mid 1990s. Like those concerts, the music on this album was composed to influence the dreams and pre-REM hypnagogic visions of the listener.

Artwork – David Agasi. Producer, Mastered By, Written-By, Liner Notes – Robert Rich. It's an ordinary DVD-video disc with music only, no picture (aside from the menus). The DVD-video format was used because it enabled us to store 7 hours of continuous audio on one side of one disc. It is a stereo (two channel) audio program. Somnium" is a single continuous track separated into three parts, a 7-hour sleep concert recording.

Somnium guides the listener through an ever-changing dreamscape, with levels of subtle detail that reward both active attention and background listening. Clocking in at seven hours, it's also considered to be one of the longest continuous musical compositions ever released on any format; verily, Somnium represents a landmark in ambient music.

Artists Robert Rich Somnium. This album has an average beat per minute of BPM (slowest/fastest tempos:, BPM).

Musical Aura Island
Although one of Robert's best works, it's unfortunately also technically more flawed ones. According to Robert's comments on his blog, there were some issues with the production of this album. Due to DVD's limitations, the second part of Somnium had to be encoded in AC-3 and this somehow caused the track to have mono channels instead of stereo (can be easily heard when compared to track 1 or 3 with headphones) during the production. Because the DVD format didn't also support gapless playback with separate tracks, fade outs had to be added between each of the parts.Luckily, Robert has also released a lossless version of this album to Musiczeit-store. On the web-release, the formerly mentioned issues have been corrected, making it technically the best version currently available.
Exellent
For the record: this is the longest piece of continuous music ever produced. Over 7 hours of Robert Rich's best, beautiful ambient works.Water effects drift in and out of heavenly chords. Birds sing and nature calls. This piece of music is wonderful, absorbing ambience. There is nothing decayed or dead here; everything is working in harmony. Changes in sound are so subtle that you find yourself in different landscapes without realising it.Part 1, a perfect countryside walk which lasts for days. You slowly venture into a mutating forest... Part 2: a visit to underground caverns filled with sparkling crystals and unknown wonders. Part 3, you are floating through space on an endless voyage to nowhere, occasionally being brought back down to Earth to enter calming forests with the alluring sound of birdcall brushing your conciousness. You are always detached but never lonely.Overall this is a wonderful album and one of the best ambient pieces I have ever heard, worth getting just because it's a record breaker alone. Other ambient record-smashers include the Orb's Blue Room, the longest single to be in the UK chart at 39:58 minutes long. And it reached #8!

When Cage's performance is concluded in 2640, it will have been at that point "produced." For now, it is still "In Production." Unless a part of the current performance has been encapsulated and released as a project itself (and that part is longer than 7 hours) I think Rich's production record still stands. ;) In any event, 7 hours is a long release by any measure. And I should add this is an excellent ambient work. I feel the first hour of the music alone is very relaxing, starting off with beautiful harmonies and subtle natural sounds. As time progresses, the music shifts to a minor key but never too dark or grating. Whether the longest piece of music or not, this is one great work of long-form ambience.
Hatе&love
I'm not quite sure where Tennant has got his information from, but it is quite inaccurate!Even if you take the three parts of Somnium as a single piece of music, at a mere seven hours, it is a long long way from being "the longest piece of continuous music ever produced". A current performance of John Cage's "Organ²/ASLSP (As SLow aS Possible)" taking place at St. Burchardi church in Halberstadt, Germany has a planned duration of 639 years!! The performance began in 2001, and so is already 10 years long! However, even this is dwarfed by the piece Longplayer (www.longplayer.org), a one thousand year long musical composition. It began playing at midnight on the 31st of December 1999, and will continue to play without repetition until the last moment of 2999, at which point it will complete its cycle and begin again.Seven hours seems a little on the short now!
