Blockbusters are entertainment products that are understood to generate interest and profits above and beyond similar products in the same time period. Originally associated with the financial performance of a stage play, a blockbuster today more often refers to a motion picture that attracts a great deal of attention and makes a great deal of money. Over time, several basic traits have come to be identified with any successful film before the product is understood to be a blockbuster. Over time, the blockbuster may eventually be regarded as a classic, due to the continued interest that is evidenced by succeeding generations through these sales. Ad. Last, a true blockbuster often generates a strong reaction from movie critics.
Block Busters is a 1944 American film directed by Wallace Fox, part of the East Side Kids series. After an afternoon of playing baseball, Muggs McGinnis (Leo Gorcey) and the East Side Kids gang arrive at the door of their clubhouse, where a man named Higgins (silent comedian Harry Langdon, in one of his last film appearances) is removing their "East Side Club" sign. Higgins explains that the owner of the place plans to rent it to some "respectable" tenants
One explanation pertains to the practice of "block booking" whereby a studio would sell a package of films to theaters, rather than permitting them to select which films they wanted to exhibit. However, this practice was outlawed in 1948 before the term became common parlance; while pre-1948 high-grossing big-budget spectacles may be retrospectively labelled "blockbusters", this is not how they were known at the time. Eventually, the focus on creating blockbusters grew so intense that a backlash occurred, with some critics and film-makers decrying the prevalence of a "blockbuster mentality" and lamenting the death of the author-driven, "more artistic" small-scale films of the New Hollywood era (despite criticism of the praise the latter era received).
