Various ‎– Dune - Original Soundtrack. Selo: Polydor ‎– 422 823 770-2. Original motion picture soundtrack from "Dune", a David Lynch movie. Studios: The Villa, Sunset Sound & The Manor. Mastered by: The Mastering Lab.

Dune is an original soundtrack album for the 1984 film Dune. Most of the album was composed by the rock band Toto-their first and only film score-but one track was contributed by Brian Eno. The soundtrack album was first released in November 1984. An extended version with an altered track listing was released in 1997

Dune was never going to be an easy film to score. Dense, overreaching, and confusing, David Lynch's interpretation of the canon of Frank Herbert surely didn't leave many stylistic decisions strolling in through the front door. Yet despite the soft rock pabulum of its past, Toto constructed a luxuriant and peculiar soundtrack that injects Dune with a barren majesty the film often failed to create on its own. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra lends these peculiar compositions a much-needed precision.

When it was first known, the fact that the prog rock act Toto would score "Dune" was perceived as a shock, but years after the movie bombed (just because it was a project too big for David Lynch, or anyone) this is what people remember most fondly about it, along with Francesca Annis hairstyle, the wonderful Carlo Rambaldi effects and some other great Lynch touches lost in a caothic narrative. Now one sees that score decision as logical: Dune, the novel, is a product of its time: grand, complicated, with lots of contracultural touches (drugs mainly), and this fits very well to the world of Toto, also grand. But it's even better than it seems on paper: they composed a lot of themes of subtle beauty that serve as a foundation to the narrative, adding the intrigue and mistery that the rest of the movie lacked. Most of the tracks are instrumental passages with only some rock ones, where the keyboards and guitars attack. The main theme is wonderful. Fanfare and keyboards, choirs, martial drums and an electric guitar that begs to be longer. The subtle ones are beautiful too: "Leto's Theme" shows the fatherly figure of Leto and then the menace over him that is the planet (recovering the main theme). "Trip to Arrakis" is another recurring theme in the movie, apparently simple in its dissonances, with violins and a choir doing the same note as the Dune theme menaces behind, catching perfectly not only the mood of the movie, but of the entire book. "The Box" is similar, narrating with music the box test, the figure of the Reverend Mother, and the near failure of Paul. The Brian Eno addition flows very well with the other themes, being even quite similar to "Trip to Arrakis". One melodic theme, one theme in major key that relieves the tension, and resolution in the first theme. Very classic and very ambient. The other main theme of the soundtrack is the Chani one, which is actually the one that plays when something about the Prophecy is told in the movie. Wine glass carrying the melody, a full orchestra letting some context chords, and then a harp that presents the theme, in that fifth-octave kind of composition that is so unique here. It's the most beautiful moment of the soundtrack, repeated in "Final Dream".I don't like much the more synth-driven snippets. "Big Battle" and "First Attack" are nice, martial tunes, but the "Desert Tune" really feels out of place as well as "Take my hand". I think both tunes were arranged differently for the movie (check the ending credits of the film and compare to this "Take My Hand": the film version obviously has more instruments), but they are not Dune themes, just Toto b-sides without the vocals. In the case of "Take my hand" it's understandable because it's the ending credits part, but "Desert Theme" is in the middle of the movie, in an epic scene, and is discarded soon. There are many releases of this soundtrack. Rereleases included more snippets of the full soundtrack (the "Take my hand" theme is still not the orchestral one) but eliminated the Eno addition, and the first of those "complete" releases had serious mastering problems that made it sound out of tune. Anyway, fascinating soundtrack, and one of my favourites for reading, studing, relaxing or thinking.

Nice review BUT Toto was never a prog rock band EVER. They where the atypical LA contemporary pop rock of their time. Yes the musicians where top notch like what one would expect from a prog band but their focus was never epic long form instrumentals but instead pop songs with a good hook i.e. 99 and Rosanna. What they contribute to the s/t is way better than their pop output a testament these guys where amazingly talented.
