Lester Young (1909-1959), the tenor saxophone virtuoso known to the world as "Prez," left an indelible mark on the Swing Era, first through his groundbreaking his work with the Count Basie Orchestra and other groups. Picking up where earlier tenor sax innovators left off, Frank Trumbauer and Coleman Hawkins in particular, Young developed a less aggressive approach, eschewing an intense and fiery style in favor of a relaxed, "cooler" but still flowing, dynamic and lyrical.

Lester Young, nicknamed Pres by legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday was, in his time, the undisputed president of the tenor saxophone.

When Young complained of Herschel Evans' vibrato, Basie placed them on either side of the alto players, and soon had the tenor players engaged in "duels"  . His personnel around 1937 included: Lester Young and Herschel Evans (tenor sax), Freddie Green (guitar), Jo Jones (drums), Walter Page (bass), Earle Warren (alto sax), Buck Clayton and Harry Edison (trumpet), Benny Morton and Dickie Wells (trombone). In 1957, Basie released the live album Count Basie at Newport.

Lester Willis Young, nicknamed Prez, was born in Woodville, Mississippi, on August 27, 1909. Lester was taught how to play music by his father, Willis Handy Young, who was a very good musician in his own right. Lester was first taught to play the violin, the trumpet, and the drums. Several famous musicians including Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, and Al Cohn were greatly influenced by Young. A majority of the songs Young played while in the Basie band where 32 bar blues with an AABA structure. When he began recording on his own, he mixed together ballads, blues, and moderate and fast tempo AABA structured tunes. He gradually moved toward his famous soft tone that inspired, most notably, Stan Getz.

Lester Young was one of the giants in jazz and anyone interested in the music must hear the wonderful things this man created. A ridiculous argument has gone on for years in jazz circles that all of Lester's worthwhile recordings were made with Basie prior to the war and that his army experience ruined him with nothing of musical value coming after that - ridiculous, as I said. This box set will hopefully put that argument to rest.
