McClinton collection. Black Speck, Happy Day Inn, North (Room 309) (7", Single, Promo).
McClinton's ebullience is undeniable on Room to Breathe, yet a sense of going through the paces permeates the project. Chord progressions are predictable; this is expected, of course, when playing the blues, as McClinton does frequently here, but with the exception of the lovely ballad "Don't Want to Love You," not much compositional substance is evident.
A comfortable room and a really good morning breakfast. Hotel just off main highway so really convenient. Good to have had a number of restaurants close to the hotel. Tea and coffee-making facilities are offered in every room at La Quinta Inn Bloomington – Normal. Ironing facilities and a hairdryer are provided for guest convenience. A daily continental breakfast is served at Bloomington – Normal La Quinta Inn, featuring waffles, fruit, and baked goods.
McClinton wrote or co-wrote every song on Room to Breathe, and the list of co-writers is impressive: Gary Nicholson, J. Fred Knobloch, Benmont Tench of Tom Petty's band, Al Anderson, formerly of NRBQ, Billy Lawson and Kim Wilson. All collaborations hit the mark but two, both ballads, "Everything I Know About the Blues" and "Don't Want to Love You". McClinton explores the darker side of blues with tracks like "Jungle Room", a tribute to late nightclubs found in the back alleys of urban America, and "The Rub", a murder story song. On "Jungle Room", he sings "Ain't no number, ain't no sign, They'll let you in if you knock three times, Find you a spot where you can lick your wound s/ They keep it cool at the Jungle Room". Chris Stamey's New Songs for the 20th Century stands as a bold new chapter in the North Carolina-based musician's career.
