Berlin-based contemporary composer Nils Frahm has built a steady reputation for his intimate, poignant piano recordings, yet they so far only showed a fragment of what to expect from a Nils Frahm concert. Frahm’s heart lies in improvisation, in the magic of a moment where, inspired by the space and the audience, his fingers can create new compositions loosely based around his familiar melodies.
Solo Remains are previously unreleased tracks from Nils Frahm’s album Solo, which was recorded on the M370, the world’s largest piano, built by the visionary piano maker David Klavins in 1987. Nils fell in love with the sound of this giant and joined David for the new project – building an even higher piano – the Model 450. The aim of it is to explore the not yet reached physical limits of the piano instrument and also to push forward into new musical dimensions. The M450 will be characterized by an even clearer sound with more depth and richness of overtones as well as an unrivaled frequency.

Nils Frahm had an early introduction to music, learning the piano throughout his childhood. It was through this that Nils began to immerse himself in the styles of classical pianists from previous generations as well as the music of contemporary composers, before forging his own musical path through composition. Today Nils Frahm continues to work as an accomplished composer, producer and celebrated performer from his Berlin-based studio at the renowned Funkhaus. Following on from his first solo piano works Wintermusik and The Bells in 2009, and 2010’s 7fingers in collaboration with cellist Anne Müller, 2011 saw his break-through album Felt on Erased Tapes. Created by placing felt on the hammers of the piano, the record defines Frahm’s signature sound which was a further development of the two-track experiment Unter/Über.
Berlin-based composer Nils Frahm has declared it Piano Day, a new annual celebration of the instrument that takes place on the 88th day of any year. Instrument fact: a piano has 88 keys!) "Piano Day is intended to be the most joyful of all holidays," he writes. To celebrate, he's released an album called Solo via Erased Tapes. Download it for free here and listen to "Wall" above.
As Resident Advisor reports, the release of the record marked what Frahm has dubbed "piano day" in an accompanying statement, which falls on day 88 of each year. Out on Erased Tapes,Solo follows from 2013's Spaces LP and can be downloaded in both WAV and MP3 formats here; it has also been released on vinyl and CD. Proceeds from sales of the physical release will be directed toward piano builder David Klavins, who is currently at work on a new model of the instrument.
