Burts Mix featured on Billy Nasty's classic 1994 BBC Essential Mix
Underworld's "Second Hand" (which first appeared on the React compilation Cafe Del Mar - Ibiza in 1994, followed by 100s of similar albums) is a mostly beatless version of the "Thing In A Book mix".
Agree below. "Thing in a Book" is absolutely insane .
What can you say about Dark Train? It's just amazing. When those synth pads drop clear your diary.
'Thing in a book' is actually also called on many Compilations as 'Scond hand' but very extended here at over 20 minutes long!! ... Awesome!!!
This has to be one of the best pieces of music that makes you feel sad and euphoric, despondent and hopeful. Ultimately driven to a happy place! Beautiful.
Some confusion on how many versions exist, there are at least four but probably even five.
The Dark Train mix by underworld is without a doubt one of the best deep, melodic, progressive tunes ever constructed, it is perfect and only gets better with age.Danny Howells has done a great job with his remix and although he is mainly known for deep house and deep progressive he has done a breakbeat mix which would do the likes of Meat Katie, Lee Coombs or the Plump DJs very proud. It is a pleasant surprise, contrast and compliments the original. It is good and I am a huge fan of DH but the original all the way for me.
Christian Smith brings his trademark smooth yet techy sound to the classic track from Underworld. Christian really does the track justice and both remixes are equally great. These tracks found themselves in my record bag on numerous occasions.
one of the best tracks ever made in the milky way on planet earth... dark train mix--1994 i miss the time every day.......................
Although they share the same name, both sides doesn't have quite much in common.Side A is well known since the Trainspotting movie.Side B is an awesome piece of music with a quick tempo superdeep bass.Like said before, never getting bored of it, a must-have.
2 monumental tracks from 90s electronic (dance) music on this record.Thing in a Book: Despite it is not Underworld's most accessible track is it still as good as its length. No stand out melodies here but gradually evolving smoothly layered sounds, short riffs and pulsating melodies with a modest mid-tempo 909 percussion beneath. Probably Underworld's best track. An epic masterpiece.Dark Train: Compared to Thing in a Book this is a very accessible track. Seen as one of the first trance tracks and featured in the Trainspotting movie. If this is played on a gig or in a club then this will be the track you remember when you are back at home.
Danny has a desire to rework tracks so that they fit into his sets. I doubt he released his breakbeat version of this track for any other reason than he had already created it, and someone asked him about it. Heck, it might not have even been his decision to release this white label. If you look at it from the perspective of him reediting the track into a breaks version he did a nice job without too much effecting the original. I think it sounds great.
Co-sign. I still listen to this record on a regular basis.
Best Underworld track ever. Both mixes are amazing. A must buy.
A few words come to mind when I think of this re-remix: Bland, uninspired, boring, pointless, lazy. Mr. Howells, what drug made you think that a remix would be needed - for a remix? This lacks the depth, drive, and overall effect the original contained. The wind-chimes are very tacky, the "fwoosh/swishes" unecessary, and the breakbeat is so utterly generic it might as well be packaged in a Wonder Bread bag. Overall this track is a failure, from conception to execution. Buy it only if you pander to Eeeked out, uninformed masses at some wannabe trance/progressive super-club completely oblivious to how irrelevant they are to the respectable electronic/dance community. Those buying it only after the original remix of Dark Train on the flip: Save your money and put it towards the original JBO release (or 1996 re-release) of the single. It has another great remix, (the "Burts" mix) and will cost equal to or less than what these clowns are asking for this release.
If a track can't hold it's weight up outside of a set or fuzzy memories of going off at the club, then it's not a very strong one to begin with.
or you clearly didnt go to one of his gigs where he would finish with it and make the place go mental? i must admit i havnt heard of uninformed masses going to a progressive club before
"Thing in a Book" is an absolute masterpiece: a long and dreamy path, littered with treasure, as if being on a path where you suddenly find pieces of gold and start playing with them, melting them and forming them into something new. It reminds me much of Underworld's first visit to the Netherlands, when they amazed the audience of the Tivoli in Utrecht with their improvisation skills, sampling a guitar live and using it throughout a trancey, dreamy live set. Respect to the music makers and the dreamers of dreams.
The story of this EP is the story of my foray into electronic music. Travel back to the year 2000; Tiesto was large. Sasha was touring with Digweed and putting the finishing touches on Airdrawndagger. This was the first time I ever heard Dark & Long, the Dark Train mix, at the Hard Rock Cafe in Orlando. Granted, I had just begun to listen to electronic a few months before. I loved the beauty of Dark Train. After hearing that, I went on a mad hunt for anything Underworld. I came across this EP which was incorrectly labeled as Germany only. I saw the track time for Thing In A Book, 22 minutes. I thought, now there's a quality release. I put it on, and oh boy, was it addictive. It is a true look into the best ambient and Underworld offered, circa 1994. This CD is officially my driving music because of Thing In A Book. After I got bored of listening to Thing In A Book for months, I went to the other tracks. They were just as good, if not better! Dark Hard has an amazing bassline to begin, and it gets better as it builds and builds. Burts has a very nice bass induced synth as a main melody, and then there's the grandmaster of them all, Dark Train. After typing this, I realize that if my words, and others, have not convinced you to seek this out by any means necessary, no one ever will.
Probably the longest EP you'll ever see or hear. I love long "when-trance-was-good-trance" songs, that really takes its time to develope, and on this EP we have many of them. My favourite here is the 20 minute + song "Thing in a book" which really puts you into a trance-like state of mind. The housey bpm (around 125-130), the rolling bassline, the smooth, hypnotic and ambientish synth melodies makes it a true masterpiece, which I rank as one of Underworlds absolutely best songs ever. I'm actually listening to it right now, and I have now reached the 18-minute "level" and the track is slowly starting to slow down. Wow, this song could easily bring tears to my eyes when I'm in the right mood!
"Most 'Ospitable" is a pleasant, short ambient tune that incorporates some elements from Dark Train. "215 Miles" goes the opposite direction, stretching out Dark Train to 20 minutes. While it eventually reaches an excellent conclusion, it could be much improved by cutting out some of the dull middle section. In short, this release is strictly for completists.
This is 1 unique progressive/trancey track that I absolutely love and cannot get enough of. It's a real emotional journey of a record that takes you away with it. Hard house music that can speak to you emotionally.
Yellow Judge
One of Underworld's classic tunes is remixed by Danny Howells into a more progressive house feel with some breaks included. A well engineered remix, but nothing can compare to the original Dark Train Mix as it brings back subtle memories from the movie 'Trainspotting'.
What an excellent collection this is. I bought this when I was living in Holland for a mere 35 Guilders (back in the day before Euros came along). Dark Train, taken from the Trainspotting soundtrack is Underworld at their best, smooth, melodic, dark and quite, quite mad if their lyrics are anything to go by.
