Frankie Goes to Hollywood's first double album was a huge hit. Their second offering also met with some success, although it is not as well remembered. For one thing, the album is shorter, more conventional. While Welcome to the Pleasuredome had some strong material, the length weakened the whole in many places. Liverpool Sound Collage was a response to the artist Peter Blake’s request for a soundtrack to About Collage, his 2000 exhibition at Tate Liverpool. Extending the collage idea beyond its traditional visual form, Paul assembled elements on the streets of Liverpool, where he interviewed astonished shoppers and passers-by. A collaboration with the Welsh band Super Furry.
The concert was headlined by former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, playing in his home city for the first time in five years. Anfield, home to Liverpool Football Club, played host to its first concert since the Hillsborough Justice Concert held 11 years earlier in 1997.
