The Heretics is the thirteenth full-length album by Greek extreme metal band Rotting Christ. It was released on 15 February 2019 via Season of Mist. All lyrics written by Sakis Tolis, except on songs "Πιστεύω", written by Nikos Kazantzakis, and "The Raven", adapted from a poem by Edgar Allan Poe; all music composed by Sakis Tolis. Sakis Tolis – vocals, guitars, bass guitar, keyboards, percussion, production. Themis Tolis – drums. Stelios Steele – poem narration (track 1, 4, 10).

This is a band who has always been about creating an atmosphere of poetry and art that elevates Black Metal above the typical stab the Virgin Mary in the chest bullshit and makes it more about individual thought and freedom. And that's what I like best about The Heretics.

The Heretics Album Artwork. Dies Irae, a response to the rather fucked up Catholic custom of singing about souls being cast into Hell at a person’s funeral, features Saki‘s admirable baritone chanting his own interpretation of the famous Latin hymn, completely free of any influence from Mozart, Verdi, or even Monty Python. A sick cut to be sure, and Sakis‘ expert transitions between Latin, Arabic, and English say a thing or two about the impact of European multilingual education, but thematically odd nonetheless.

On The Heretics, the band seems to be letting the music do all of the talking. The soundtrack quality is still there, but on a song such as Hallowed Be Thy Name, the band sets a mood of tension and readiness. Quite a simple tune really, a chorus chanting in the background and a slow, steady rhythm section delivers once more in a sort of visual fashion. Each strike is enunciated beautifully, and the album simply begs to be blasted. This song is definitely a highlight, featuring some impressive and gorgeous guitar soloing. The Black Metal roots are never forgotten with Rotting Christ, as Dies Irae incorporates some blasts beneath a choral vocal arrangement worthy of cathedrals.

The Heretics will be unleashed on Feb. 15 through Season of Mist, marking the 13th studio effort for the Hellenic battalion, and they've debuted the first song off the record, "Fire, God and Fear. Melody has mostly been the focus of Rotting Christ's sound, though it's something they had moved away from in recent releases. He continues, "A song that definitely won't create a clear opinion on how the new album will sound like, but shows the heretic and atmospheric approach we have chosen for creation.
