Avevamo incontrato il Logan Strosahl Team, la formazione del giovane musicista newyorchese, circa tre anni fa, recensendo il precedente Up Go We, nel quale già emergeva l'interesse del sassofonista e compositore per la musica barocca del XV e XVI secolo. Personnel: Logan Strosahl: alto saxophone, spoken word; Michael Sachs: clarinets; Sam Decker: tenor saxophone; Aquiles Navarro: trumpet; Nick Sanders: piano; Connor Backer: drums; Henry Fraser: bass; Julia Easterlin: spoken word. Title: Book I Of Arthur Year Released: 2017 Record Label: Sunnyside Records. Book I Of Arthur by Neri Pollastri. Up Go We by Budd Kopman. Up Go We by Neri Pollastri. Sunnyside Records 2017.
Clearly, Logan Strosahl and his Team have never heard such words of warning, or, if they have, they foolishly ignored them and ventured forth. To the wise man’s surprise, however, they have returned victorious! Holding in his hands three tomes and chanting in a mighty parade, Logan handed one of the books to the old man and he looked at it with much confusion, assaulted by the unorthodox fanfare. I download it for a proper listen, either later that day or the next. Later that day or the next. To be entirely honest, I don’t feel like I ever could give justice to Book I of Arthur. It’s a complex interwoven web of classical tradition music and various forms of modern jazz. The Logan Strosahl Team, an eight-piece ensemble, tells the legend of Arthur in a new form: a modern jazz three-album suite.
Battle of Bedegraine - Logan Strosahl Team: Aquiles Navarro-Trmpt, Sam Decker-Tnr. Sax, Logan Strosahl-Alt. Sax, Michael Sachs-Clar. Nick Sanders-Piano, Connor Baker-Drums, Henry Fraser-bass. Arthur's leadership and tactical competence are put to the test against a numerically superior force, and he comes up with a ruse of war that surprises and routs the enemy force after intense fighting. After the battle, Arthur crucially decides to forgive his once-enemies in the interest of consolidating power. For this piece, I was trying to portray, in the first 3 minutes, the actual course of the battle, and in the minimalist pattern of juxtaposed cells near the end, different aspects of Arthur himself.

About Logan Strosahl Team. Combining his penchant for forward-thinking modern jazz with his love of British and European classical music, saxophonist Logan Strosahl has carved a distinctive niche in the post-bop community. A graduate of Boston's New England Conservatory, Strosahl began pulling his disparate influences together early on, and showcased his broad, multi-layered approach on his debut album, 2015's Up We Go. Since then, he has continued to grow, playing in an array of formats from intimate duo settings to larger, more arranged dates with his seven-piece ensemble.
Logan Strosahl - alto saxophone, narration Michael Sachs - clarinets Sam Decker - tenor saxophone Aquiles Navarro - trumpet Nick Sanders - piano Connor Baker - drums Henry Fraser - bass Julia Easterllin - narration. Like most jazz musicians, Strosahl has examined the full scope of the jazz tradition to inform his own approach to the music. He has, however, gone a few steps farther.
