Joseph Haydn, the undeniable father of the classical period, lived to the ripe old age of 77. But did he wind down in his later years? Not a chanc. hink of Haydn and you think of his impeccable musical craft, for some the defining sound of the classical period. You think of his great works, the London Symphonies, The Creation, and the Trumpet Concerto. But what might surprise you is that those particular works were all composed in the last years of his life, before he died in 1809.
Haydn’s notoriety as a prankster has not always enhanced his reputation. Even during his long and successful lifetime (1732-1809), there were more solemn music-lovers, including Austria’s Emperor Joseph II no less, who regarded such quirks as beneath the dignity of music. In the 19th century, Haydn’s jokes were widely heard as tokens of genial superficiality, and only a fraction of his vast output kept a toehold in the repertoire. Even today, there are many who would hesitate to place Haydn’s achievement on a par with his admiring friend Mozart or his unruly pupil Beethoven.
There are 106 symphonies by the classical composer Joseph Haydn (1732–1809).

Joseph Haydn: Joseph Haydn, Austrian composer who was one of the most important figures in the development of the Classical style in music during the 18th century. What was Joseph Haydn’s family like? Haydn was the second son of humble parents: his father was a wheelwright, and his mother, before her marriage, was a cook. His younger brother, Michael, also became a composer and was highly regarded for his church music.
Joseph Haydn, the son of a wheelwright from Rohrau in Lower Austria, spent nearly all of his creative life in the service of one noble family, the Esterházys, and yet became the most famous and revered composer of his time. Holed up either in Eisenstadt or at Eszterháza, the family pile in Hungary, Haydn was ‘forced to become original’ – or so he claimed. Haydn’s greatest achievements are his 104 numbered symphonies and 68 string quartets. He was pivotal in bringing the symphony out of the salon and into the concert hall; those numbered in the 40s and 50s show him straining at the boundaries of symphonic protocol and those in the 80s, 90s and 100s (especially the sets composed for Paris and London) lead the way to the high- Classical style of Beethoven. Having virtually invented the string quartet, he showed how it could become the perfect forum for musical argument and equality.
Björk closed out her first decade as a solo artist with the retrospective Björk's Greatest Hits. Despite its somewhat pedestrian title and approach (especially considering some of her intricate import collections and box sets) she still managed to find a way to put a twist on the collection: she let her fans vote for which songs they wanted included on the track listing.
