As we look at the best New Wave albums of the '70s and '80s, we're focused both on the early records that overlap with our 50 Best Post-Punk Albums list through the New Romantics, left-of-center power-pop and synth rock of the '80s. The 50 Best New Wave Albums. By Josh Jackson September 8, 2016 12:58pm. Music Lists New Wave. New Wave music meant a lot of things in the late 1970s.
Note- These songs are not necessarily the artists all-time greatest, but their best of the 'New Wave' sound
New Wave bands were also aided by the growth of MTV, which helped visualize their songs, and reach a broader audience. Thanks to iconic videos, many New Wave bands were able to capture the hearts and minds of young music fans. This list answers the questions "who are the best New Wave bands of all time?" and "who is the greatest New Wave musician ever?" If you know enough about the genre, please vote based on the quality of the band's music instead of just voting for the most popular New Wave bands that you might've heard of.
New wave and its ugly twin sister, post-punk, are two terms used and abused with abandon when describing the music that followed the punk rock explosion of the mid-70s. To some people, new wave was the music made by bands who were too traditionally melodic to be classed as punk; bands that believed in good ol’ songwriting, in craft and – shock horror – quite liked the idea of having a hit (step forward The Pretenders, Elvis Costello, The Police etc). Our ‘new wave’ albums, therefore, have been chosen to fit exceptionally woolly criteria. There are some unusual choices worth justifying: if the ska-punk of the Two Tone bands is considered new wave (for taking a punk attitude to Jamaican ska), then it stands to reason that both Dexy’s Midnight Runners (punk attitude + soul music) and The Pogues (punk attitude + folk music) count too.

New wave music wasn't easily defined, but most fans knew it when they heard it. We chose 10 songs that, to us, were the best of the genre. For a few years, new wave, nebulous and vague as it was, worked. It also mutated into new music and later alt-rock. It was a term you could toss around and people had a general idea of what you were talking about. Most of the acts listed here have at least a handful of songs that could have been chosen, but for this 20-song list we kept to the one-band/one-song dictate. We also stuck to the late-’70s/early-’80s heyday. Sometimes, we picked the best-known song-the hit -and other times went a little deeper to a preferred song.
Enhanced Chill Vol. 2. 5, 112. Various.
Ever! is a compilation album brand from Circa Records (trading under the 'strategic marketing' brand name of EMI/Virgin Records). Ever! et., however on a number of indie music collections the genre aspect was replaced by a full list of artist names.
