The Persuasions are an a cappella group that began singing together in Brooklyn, New York in the mid-1960s. The Persuasions were formed in Brooklyn in 1962, singing a cappella under corner streetlights and in subway corridors. Their style combined gospel, soul, early rock and jazz into melodic five-part harmonies.
Take 6, for example, would have been all but unthinkable without the Persuasions as role models. Later albums would find the group performing contemporary pop and soul songs in their own style, but here they're doo-wop classicists, either covering genre hits like the Heartbeats "A Thousand Miles Away," or the earlier pop standards such as "Stardust," "Ebb Tide," and "Old Man River" that the original doo-wop groups were wont to deconstruct.

In the new millennium the group expanded their audience to include children, traveling to schools to teach children to sing a cappella. After their 1970 debut, Acappella, the Persuasions recorded new albums steadily through the decade, one of the most popular of which was the 1972 release Street Corner Symphony. Each song was arranged using a method the group developed as a method of working together. The first step was to have Hayes lay down a bass line. Stardust, Relic, 1994.
