The Mercury Prize, formerly called the Mercury Music Prize, is an annual music prize awarded for the best album released in the United Kingdom by a British or Irish act. It was established by the British Phonographic Industry and British Association of Record Dealers in 1992 as an alternative to the Brit Awards. The prize was originally sponsored by Mercury Communications, a brand owned by Cable & Wireless, from which the prize gets its name.
Dying Fetus is an American death metal band originally from Greater Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Formed in 1991, the group is known for their consistently hook-laden song structures, characterized by blast beats, complex riffing, slam riffs and heavy breakdowns. Additionally, their reality-based lyrics characterized by political/modern themes are notable in death metal.

The album was much better received than their debut, showing the first glimpses of the technicality they would utilise often in the future and featuring the joke song, "Kill Your Mother/Rape Your Dog," as well as their first record with drummer Kevin Talley and their last with Brian Latta, who was replaced by "Sparky" Voyles. Almost surprisingly given their history, Dying Fetus retained the same lineup for their next album, "Reign Supreme," which was released in 2012. Gallagher stated that the record was a return to an older Dying Fetus sound, with less technical death metal on show, but in spite of changing direction from that of the successful predecessor, fans were very receptive to the record.
