Simple Minds’ debut album Life in a Day was originally released in 1979 on the Zoom Records (the label was run by their then manager Bruce Findlay), distributed by Arista Records. The album was produced by John Leckie, and spawned the singles Life in a Day and Chelsea Girl. Simple Minds toured the UK in 1979 as the support band to Magazine. Empires and Dance so impressed Peter Gabriel that he invited the band to support him on a European tour. By 1981, Simple Minds signed to Virgin Records and release their turnaround album Sons and Fascination/Sisters Feelings Call which spawned the hit single Love Song. The album was produced by Steve Hillage, former guitarist for the psychedelic progressive rock band ‘Gong’.
Empires and Dance was recorded in Wales on the Rolling Stones mobile. While more successful than its non-charting predecessor (Real to Real Cacophony), Empires and Dance charted relatively poorly, peaking at only number 41 in the UK Albums Chart. Following the release of this album, Simple Minds transferred to Virgin Records, where they met with much greater commercial success. In 1983, Virgin re-released "I Travel" on 12", to coincide with the acquisition of the band's Arista catalogue.

Celebration is a compilation album by Simple Minds, released in 1982. The compilation features tracks from the band's tenure on the Arista Records label prior to their move to Virgin Records in 1981. One of the tracks, "Kaleidoscope", was exclusive to this CD and LP until it appeared on the X5 box set many years later. All tracks written by Jim Kerr, except "Life in a Day" and "Chelsea Girl" by Charlie Burchill and Jim Kerr. Charlie Burchill – Guitar, Vocals. Derek Forbes – Bass, Vocals.
Although Virgin has reissued 12 Simple Minds albums- nearly their entire oeuvre- I've chosen to focus on two of their most wonderfully strange records, 1979's Reel to Real Cacophony and 1980's Empires and Dance, the band's sophomore and junior albums, respectively. These two albums feature Simple Minds pulling themselves together musically and finding their direction.
