Aimé Césaire: Aimé Césaire, Martinican poet, playwright, and politician, who was cofounder with Léopold Sédar Senghor of Negritude, an influential movement to restore the cultural identity of black Africans. Together with Senghor and others involved in the Negritude movement, Césaire was educated in Paris.

Césaire taught the Martinican psychologist and cultural theorist Franz Fanon, whose more vehemently activist writings extended debates about ways of combating colonialism in the 1960s. He was also a significant influence on another younger contemporary, Edouard Glissant, who moved away from Negritude towards the notion of antillanité, which emphasised the Caribbeanness of Martinican identity. Increasingly, a later generation of black intellectuals came to feel that Césaire's critique of colonialism was not radical enough and he was also attacked for not writing in French Creole.

While studying music, he also obtained a Master’s degree in philosophy, with high honors, from the Sorbonne (2001). This last album was the first project produced by the label he created and now directs, Gaya Music Production. With the 2013 album Clear Fire, audiences fell hard under the spell of his music, prompting the press to say of his playing that it is Coltranian in the best sense of the word (Nouvel Obs).

Martinican author Aimé Césaire is not only responsible for Cahier d'un retour au pays natal (first published in Spanish 1942; original French version 1947; translated as Memorandum on My Martinique, 1947), a widely acknowledged masterpiece documenting the twentieth-century colonial condition, but he is also an accomplished playwright. Like his poetry and polemical essays, Césaire's plays explore the paradox of black identity under French colonial rule  . Among Césaire's students were the writer Edouard Glissant and the critic of colonialism Frantz Fanon. In 1939 Césaire published his first version of Cahier d'un retour au pays natal in the journal Volontés (Intentions).
