Made in Heaven is the third single recorded by Freddie Mercury, and his fourth release as a solo artist. After Mercury’s death, the song’s title gave the name to Queen’s 1995 posthumous album Made in Heaven. The song was also chosen, along with I Was Born to Love You, to be re-recorded for the album, with the previous vocals over a newly recorded instrumental track. The song’s video was realized with the help of David Mallet, previously involved in the making of the music video for I Was Born to Love You, as well as five Queen clips.
Doing Made In Heaven was like assembling a jigsaw puzzle. But I wouldn't have put my seal of approval on it if I hadn't thought it was up to standard. The others worked discontinuously between 1993 and 1995, piecing together the album from scraps of material discarded over the years. But fear not! Mercury-arguably rock's campiest performer-would never let anything (even death) turn things dreary. Given its halting construction, it also makes for a surprisingly organic work with no shortage of highlights, from the rock version of Mercury's solo dance hit "I Was Born to Love You," to the wonderfully schmaltzy title song, to a fascinating jaw dropper of an unlisted finale.
Originally titled Made In Heaven, Freddie changed his mind just weeks prior to the album going to press, preferring instead the aptness, as he perceived it, of Mr Bad Guy. However, Made In Heaven was destined to provide Roger, Brian and John with a fitting title to the final Queen album - albeit a decade later, in November 1995. For that project, the three remaining band members would painstakingly piece together the vocals left behind by Freddie – recorded in Montreux during his last months - to make a seamless final album. The bulk of his archive naturally relates to the 15 studio LPs and 700 live concerts recorded with Queen, but Freddie also recorded two solo albums, several non-album singles, and guest appearances on numerous projects by friends.
But in 1995, when the surviving members got around to releasing the final recordings done with Mercury in the form of Made in Heaven, the status quo had returned. The album topped the charts in Western Europe, with its single, "Heaven for Everyone," reaching the Top Ten, while in the . it was on and off the charts within weeks. Musically, Made in Heaven harked back to Queen's 1970s heyday with its strong melodies and hard rock guitar playing, topped by Mercury's bravura singing and some of the massed choir effects familiar from "Bohemian Rhapsody.
