Under the Jasmin Tree is an album by American jazz group the Modern Jazz Quartet featuring performances recorded in 1967 and released on the Apple label. The album was the fourth release on the Beatles' new label and the MJQ were the only jazz act to record for the label. All compositions by John Lewis.
Apple's 2010 reissue of the Modern Jazz Quartet's recordings for the label pairs 1968's Under the Jasmin Tree and 1969's Space, adding a previously unreleased version of "Yesterday" as a bonus track. The Modern Jazz Quartet. Exclusive Prime pricing. Under The Jasmin Tree, Space. In 1968, the LP, Under the Jasmin Tree, introduced me to MJQ. I soon obtained other recordings of this unique chamber jazz ensemble, but while all were very good indeed, none had the spark of this first album, and I purchased the remastered CD in 1993. This album was merely 35 minutes in duration. The second half of this present compilation, Space, does not match the verve and originality of the first. Venus is too spacey, Mars is just OK, the adagio of Concerto de Aranjuez was and remains overdone, and this version is not especially good.
